Official DJ / Music Production Thread v2.0

READ THIS OP BEFORE POSTING. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

Welcome to the DJing/Music Production thread! This is the place to post up your productions and/or recordings of your mixes, discuss production and DJing techniques/methods/tips/tricks/stories/experiences, shamelessly promote yourself, and give and receive advice/criticism.

General Thread Rules

All Pbnation and Small Talk rules apply in here:
http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=3491365
http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=1159498

Keep the discussion mature, on-topic and free of douchebaggery. Ignore trolls and link newbs the OP post if need be.

Make sure the flames are sent via PM. Any flaming, trolling, or off-topic posts will be reported/deleted/infracted.

YouTube is full of tutorials for just about any DAW. It's much easier to learn by following along step-by-step tutorials rather than having people type out in here what to do. It's recommended that you take the time to search before asking.

How to give criticism:

When someone asks for CC (constructive criticism) for their track, it is expected of you that you respond with the insight you've gained from your own production experience. Give specific critiques of the volume/punch/quality/EQing of the percussion, the structure and arrangement of all the pieces, the quality/sound of the synths. Let people know if certain elements need to be EQed better, if there's key clashing in the melodies/chord progressions, or if some channels are too loud/too subtle.

An example of good criticism:

"Your kick needs more punch/presence ; try rolling off the low frequencies in your bass synth at around 200hz"

An example of bad criticism:

"The song is boring and I don't like it."

How to receive criticism:

One thing any artist of any medium must learn is how to take criticism. You need to accept the fact that unless you're some kind of prodigy, your productions aren't going to be anywhere near the professional quality anyone is used to hearing from famous artists. Everyone in this thread is here to learn; to better themselves as producers or DJ's. Getting mad at people and instigating flame wars because someone identified the flaws in your track is not acceptable. There's nothing to lose by following someone's advice on how to better your track; if the advice doesn't work for you, move on and explore other options to improving your production's quality. And remember, generally speaking, nothing you produce in your first two years of consistent producing will be worthy of the beatport charts. Practice, practice, practice.

Proper song structure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_structure
Music theory: http://www.howmusicreallyworks.com/P...roduction.html

DJing FAQ

What is beat matching?

Matching the tempos of two songs in order to blend them together symbiotically. If you want any respect, it's recommended you stay away from your controller's 'sync' button.

What is harmonic mixing?

Using the key of a track in order to mix it into another similarly keyed track, to create excellent sounding transitions.

Production FAQ

What is the best DAW (Digital Audio Workshop)?

There's no best DAW. All have their own advantages and disadvantages. In addition to this, no single DAW is favoured by professional producers. For example, Deadmau5 and Skrillex use Ableton, Afrojack and Avicii use Fruity Loops. Choose the one that has a UI you're most comfortable with. Some popular choices are:
Ableton Live: http://www.ableton.com/
Fruity Loops: http://flstudio.image-line.com/
Reason: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/
Logic Studio: http://www.apple.com/ca/logicstudio/

What is EQing?

The process of adjusting the balance between frequency components within an electronic signal. In layman's terms, that means emphasising certain frequencies and reducing other frequencies in order to balance the sounds in a track, create headroom, and in general, create a good sounding mix.

How do compressors work?

Compressing a sound raises the levels of quieter parts of a sound and lowers the levels of louder parts.

What is sidechaining?

Sidechain compression, or sidechaining, refers to compressing a sound based on the levels of another sound. So, for example, you can sidechain a bassline so that every time the kick drum hits, the bassline is compressed and thus quiets, creating that throbbing, pumping sound so famous in trance and electro house.

What are good sample packs?

High quality samples are essential for high quality production. No amount of compressing, EQing and re-sampling can make a sample, that is initially low quality, sound good. Vengeance produce the most popular sample packs, used widely by professional producers: http://www.vengeance-sound.com

How do I give my kick drum presence/punch?

Layer your samples together. Meaning, have two or maybe even three kick samples hitting at once. Proper EQing is essential as well.

How do I give my snare/clap presence?

The same as you do with kicks. Layer, EQ, compress.

What are some good VST synths?

There is no best VST. Massive is quite popular though for bass synths. VST's all have their own pros and cons. Pick the one that has the UI you prefer. It's recommended that you stick to one VST at first and master it. Having too much to choose from and too much to work with can be detrimental. Popular VST synths are:
Massive: http://www.native-instruments.com/#/...ducer/massive/
Sylenth: http://www.lennardigital.com/modules/home/
Zeta: http://www.cakewalk.com/products/z3ta/

Would this be considered a bootleg? I thought the vocal from Walking on a Dream matched up pretty well with Hardwell's "Cobra." Literally just made this thru VDJ lol, so I doubt it's anywhere near perfect.

Any constructive criticism much appreciated, thanks..

damn straight, i run this ***** lol.

and johnny, no, that would be a mash up, a bootleg is an unofficial remix, like my bootleg of dillon francis IDGAFOS, or one of the many bootlegs laidback luke has done. they are always given away for free if not horded by the producer himself

I feel like the Walking on a dream acapella goes well over a lot of tracks:

Here is the one I made 6 months ago w/ Michael Woods - First Aid:

^I actually checked out your soundcloud a little earlier, and yeah it definitely does.

With the popularity of EDM going through the roof now, does anyone else get annoyed that people fail to understand the distinction between DJ and producer?

yeah, it sucks. especially when people like skrillex, flux pavilion, doctor p etc are all getting paid 15k+ PER gig yet suck really bad at djing and play pre-arranged sets.

the thing I find most interesting is all of these regular djs gravitating to the live show when they - as oc said - either suck bad at djing and play pre arranged sets
ala feed me

he means producers djing off 2 decks mixing poorly, unlike say kam and i who come from a DJing background and when we play out actually DJ and play to the crowd and etc, not just play whatever i want and only that and mix like a top 40's dj.

Why is mixing off of 2 decks a factor in that?

I think it's just weird he referred to them as "regular djs."
