Yeah. That's smart. Credit cards are great if you pay them off entirely or at least pay them off in a month or two.

****, it's such a hard decision to either take a free, reliable good condition minivan and sell the Supra, or keep it and have something not reliable. I get so much enjoyment and satisfaction from it that it's worth the hassle for the most part.

If you can't get to work on time, dealing with your supervisor isn't going to be worth the hassle of having a supra...

I know. It really sucks.

I have a spare motor that I could rebuild in the spare time, and all I would really need to do for the moment is replace any hoses or belts that are a little old. But there's always the "what if".

they report your credit limit and your current balance. this is called your credit to debt ratio. Based upon your payment history, length of history and the types of credit you have they will determine your credit score.

For the first one your interest rate will suck. You should be able to get a 0%APR introductory rate for a few months. Use it to maintain a balance and then pay off the balance before the end of your time without interest. That should allow you to quickly build a payment history and show that you can responsibly maintain a balance. After that you should get offers for cards with better interest rates and then from there you can make the jump to one of those but keep your first account open and make periodic purchases and payments to keep the average age of your accounts higher and the account open.

Not having a credit history and a poor credit score makes getting loans more expensive because you are a higher risk for them to loan money to.

Thanks man. Just to clarify I never took a direct IED hit but there was one close call. However, when I was at KAF a rocket landed literally on top a group I was walking with. Ears rang and I had a splitting headache for a day or two. The lady who evaluated me said she things I'm sensitive to explosions... I laughed and said well no **** I think we all are a little sensitive to explosions lady :/

I just dumped 10-12k into a 2008 STI so I know where you're coming from... but let me tell you this:

If you own the minivan but not the supra ditch the supra and keep the van. If you don't own either ditch the supra and keep the van. If you own both keep the supra just don't insure it and park or till you can make it reliable.

I miss not having a car payment. A SrA living off base, no dependents, and owns his car... yeah it was nice! All my bills were: cell (80 bucks), insurance (90), rent (375) and then stuff like gas food etc etc.

I made the mistake of buying a newer car without getting it looked at by a professional. I ended up having to replace the motor, turbo, and everything besides the drive train. The clutch has been shot since 45k miles and the car has just been abused. Its been an awful adventure. I did the stuff I did because I needed a reliable DD. If I could have found some loophole and had the car totalled and built it myself then yeah I would have done that but I couldn't.

Take my advice... as a young airmen get a ride that you can pay off quick because when you get to the E-4 to E-6 range you'll be able to save more money. Toys will come later and I've had to learn this the hard way. I'm making a lot of sacrifices right now cause of it

I have 2 reliable cars and wanting to buy a toy when I get back forms deployment
If I didn't t have my truck and the wife's car I would buy another reliable car

All the new airmen in my shop have new cars with car payments

I wouldn't want to have a payment if I didn't have to and save cash while in the dorms

I have a year and change left on the wife's car and if she wants another she's trading straight. Not adding

The minivan is paid off. I would most definitely keep both, but I don't have a place to put it. I can't really tow it with a minivan, and keeping it at my parent's house is too much of a hassle for them especially if it will be a long time before I can get it.

Plus, wouldn't the base frown upon an uninsured car just sitting in the lot?

Hah. Just got back from goodwill. I have quite a few things from thrift shops.. but suits are one thing that is hard to pick up used.

Goodwill is great for some old tweed blazers. Spend a couple bucks getting them tailored to fit and they are money.
