In my career field I wish they would ask everyone who does and doesn't want to go because lives depend on us. So sending someone down range who DOES NOT want to go(which happens quite often) is bad mojo and doesn't help the rest of us perform our mission.
don't plan to suck. Stuff coming across my networks saves lives on a recurring basis so I'm used to lives being on the line. Deploying is on my bucket list of things to do before departing from the military.

I purposely volunteered for Afghanistan when I heard of deployments to Iraq were coming down because I personally did not want to go to Iraq.
As far as telling your family, my family was military so they know that things change instantly. I tell them anytime there is a possibility I am going anywhere.. and they know full well, that it might not even happen. You should be fine holding off until its official. They can't blame you for wanting to do that.
yeah, I think I'll wait and see what happens. I'm hoping I get to go though.
