I got a notice from AT&T that tells me that if I don't stop tethering my phone that they will cancel my unlimited plan and and replace it with a limited plan + a tethering package costing me more unless I stop.. I was grandfathered into the AT&T unlimited plan so I don't want to lose that so obviously I am going to stop but..

How does it make sense that I have the unlimited plan but they are limiting my data? I checked and I rarely go over 2GB a month so why would they care where I pull my data from if I stay under a reasonable amount? Obviously the answer is greed, but it just seems so stupid. If they are losing money by grandfathering their unlimited plan to people, then quit offering it and let me switch carriers without a penalty...

yea I'm grand fathered in as well, but I don't honestly know what "tethering" is. Can you please explain?

Basically it is an application that allows you to use your phones cell signal, and it is turned into a wifi signal that can provide internet to other devices. So If I am at an airport where I don't want to pay for their internet I can turn on my phones tethering and use the internet on my laptop. I tend to use it when I am working away from the office so that I can work on photos and upload them without being at the office.

Some people abuse it by using their unlimited phone plan as their home internet. I just use it sometimes as a convenience thing.

There are apps you can download from Google Play to do it, but apparently AT&T is sending notices now if you use it at all.

Yea, that's kind of dumb then. I'm on unlimited too but I don't see why that should be restricted.

I think when I get out and go to school I'm going to switch to a cheaper phone. some flip phone that costs me 30$ a month for voice and txt...Iphone bill sucks.

I can't give it up. I use it too frequently. It just sucks because the phone companies know that and keep jacking up prices because they know they can.
