Quick question for all college teams.

I'm trying to revive the team at UCSD as an incoming freshman and i was wondering how you guys deal with the school's policy for no firearms on campus? Where do you guys keep your equipment and get to practice/events?
Thanks!

Personally, I keep my gear in my gearbag, in my room. It almost never comes out, and if it does, the door is closed.
As for transportation we carpool to practices and events. The only event we didn't drive to was Nationals in Florida.

Do you have any tips in particular that could win the school board over to openly support and sponsor our team?

Generally, if you can find another school in your area that has a paintball team in good standing you can ask a rec sports/administration person at that school to talk to the corresponding person at your school.

Also, you can explain that, as a club, you have the most to lose by people being stupid with paintball equipment. e.g. "Sir/Ma'am, we will go out of our way to find and report people who misuse paintball equipment because we want to grow our club following all applicable rules and regulations." etc etc

If they don't see it and they don't hear it, they don't know it's there. My own roommate didn't know I had my gear in the dorm.

Well I'm the president of a team at Virginia Military Institute and have to write permits for almost everything. So I simply asked to keep our gear in our rooms. Also I got them to give us a room that only I and the club sports staff have a key to. For transportation we have to rent cars since only seniors are allowed to have cars at my school.

We have our on-campus students give their guns to upperclassmen who have their own apartments to hold onto.

Before we had our club, when I lived on campus and didn't know anyone to hold my gear, I either left it in my trunk (still technically not legal) or kept it in my gearbag in my room at all times. It's the dumb kids who show off their guns, or cycle them in the residence halls, or shoot people/stuff on campus that get in trouble. If you don't talk about it, and just leave it in your bag, you're probably fine.

They checked our rooms once per semester, but they don't actually go through anything. It's more of walk in, see if there's any fire hazards, or anything out that doesn't belong, and leave.

To take it a step further, outside of maybe 5 people, no one knew I even played paintball when I was a freshman.

The biggest thing to remember when living in the dorms is that everything is at the discretion of your RA. If your RA wants to get you in trouble, he needs to write you up and speak to a supervisor. That takes time and effort. When many RA's are lazy and already have a busy schedule, they won't want to deal with you. Unless you do something to attract unwanted attention or make their life harder, they won't be interested in bothering you for it.

Like I said, don't talk about it. Don't shoot it. Don't remove it from storage unless you're on the way to the field. Don't give staff a reason to search your room. Keep out of trouble and trouble won't find you.
