PhotoMOB v40: Are we still banned from PSP?

2009 - Las Vegas, NV. A group of photographers forged a bond that grew... and grew... and grew! The group spawned a forum, a website, clothes and headbands. It's amazing that something so simple as a group of photographers who love to make people look cool could grow from a group of 11 to the large group of Members, Nominees and Followers/friends. I hope that we continue to grow and offer something unique to the paintball world and beyond in photography.

-Robbo

The PhotoMOB is a collaboration of photographers, ranging from hobbyists to professionals. We all have one similar interest: photography, in many cases, more specifically paintball photography. We have joined together, creating this group to bring our vision to the masses! We will take advantage of our numbers to learn from each other's strengths and improve on techniques that have been built by those who came before us. We will showcase our work and promote community beyond the field, by involving more and more photographers, hosting more and more events inside and outside of the sport.

To the players: We hope that you enjoy our work and support the photographers in the PhotoMOB! Hire them at events, give them thanks for making it to events, give them a water when they're in the pits! We are self policed and if someone in our group is not living up to the high standards, they will be demoted or removed from the thread and website. Because of that, you should feel quite confident in working with any of us. We'll be organizing new and exciting things for all of us to benefit from at events, ranging from "PhotoMOB PhotoBooths" to parties and group gatherings afterhours!

SYLPP! SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PAINTBALL PHOTOGRAPHER!

To the photographers: If you're a photographer and would like to be involved... it all starts here! Post up, get to know the crew... we'll make sure to invite you out to our next meet up at an event or elsewhere! Membership requires a nomination from a listed PhotoMOB member and final membership decision will be based on the person's contribution to the thread. Pending memberships will be listed under the member list! The movement starts here!

Finally got my camera out for my second race back with the kart team. This time I'm less of a mechanic and more of a managerial role. Which is different, but I like it. It really compliments my ADD and OCD; overseeing all of the other mechanics and helping out where ever rather than being tied down to just one kart.

Perseid meteor shower from Enchanted Rock, Texas...

Step one was building a power supply to run the camera all night. Found a 1D3/4/X DC coupler on eBay and replaced the obscure connector with a more common one. Then ran that to a 12V sealed lead-acid battery with a step-down voltage converter (13.8V --> 11.8V I believe; Canon LP-E4 is a nominal 11.1V) and 3A fuse.

Step two was shooting, which took place over about five hours on the early morning of the 13th, the peak of the shower.
Lens was the Samyang 14/2.8, exposures were 30" f2.8 ISO3200.

Step three was early post-processing. Frames were given basic settings in DPP, a slight NR pass, then exported to TIFFs and hit again with Noise Ninja in Photoshop.

Step four was stacking. DeepSkyStacker did most of the work here. Since it's limited to 32-bit memory addressing I had to break the job up into 10 stacks, then combined those into another stack in Photoshop, where auto-align actually decided to use the stars (!).

Step five was bringing in the meteors, which DSS discards; and the foreground, which stacking swirls out. Lots of fiddling to get all those lined up.

496 image stack w/ rotation

1. Same stack w/ foreground, perseids, more post-processing (This PSD is ~1GB). Still finding things that don't quite look right in this one.

Stack w/o rotation

Milky Way stack w/ rotation, foreground still needs work, just wanted to see what this would look like.

Any of you guys ever have experience with a lens/body combo that actually had a focusing issue where you needed to change the microadjustment settings?

I'm looking at some pictures where the AF on my 1D IV would lock completely on a mask, for example, and then the focus appears to be further back like on a pack. For almost all of these shots the aperture was at 2.8, which is pretty shallow, but i'm seeing this back focusing trend on a lot of images, so it seems somewhat consistent. I can post an example if that would help at all.

Is it a user error when using AI Servo? When I used a customer's 1dX I would always screw up the focal point because the focus speed was so damn fast compared to my 7D. I would simply miss the focus because the camera was fast and if I didn't hold perfectly steady where I wanted the focus it'd jump to the background/etc.

my old 7D(now stretch's) did that with my 70-200 2.8. it would miss focus quite a bit. maybe stretch has sense had better luck than i did.

i also have a 50L that misses focus very badly when wide open. maybe it's user error, maybe im cursed with ****ty lenses.

What's your tracking sensitivity at and how do you have your AF points set up?

I usually just use the back button for AF and a single AF point (usually center or 1 to 2 directly up) with AI Servo. With those settings i'll usually just lock the focus on what I want (mask typically) and recompose how I want to frame the shot or just take it if that's what I want. I guess it's possible they could be moving in between when I lock focus and take the shot, but i'm seeing this when i'm tracking people as they move.

I know the 1D IV's have an AF system that people love or hate (or love to hate?). I never had an issue like this on my 1D III with my trusty 70-200. If i missed focus with that setup it's usually because I was using a single AF point and just totally blew it.

Here's what I was using yesterday:
CFn III, 2 = 0
CFn III, 3 = 0
CFn III, 4 = 1
CFn III, 8 = 0

My sensitivity was default at 0 and I used, mostly, just the center AF point or 1 or 2 directly above it with no AF expansion (disabled instead of using left/right or surrounding points). Maybe I should turn the sensitivity down 1 notch.

I'll try to post some samples tomorrow of what i'm seeing.
