Moving to Portland (non-PB related questions)

So my wife and I are relocating to Portland from Indiana and we're planning on taking a trip out there to scout out potential neighborhoods to live in. Any suggestions on places to look? We have two dogs so we'd prefer to rent a house over an apartment, and I apologize if this is weird, but I'd appreciate any help or advice you all could offer us. Thanks in advance!

What type of people are you? Younger? Older? Professional? Hipsters? Country folk? City dwellers or Suburbia's? Does someone have a job here? If so, what city is it located in?

Lots of great areas and pocket neighborhoods in the tri-county area, all ranging from slow pace to living in the mix of things downtown.

Let us know, just be careful who you gather advise from here. Feel free to PM and I can pass some thoughts.

I am part of a paintball community here in town. You find us at the link in my sig.

Cheers and good luck with the search.

Sounds good. Shooting you a PM now!

For the record, both my wife and I are 24. She teaches kindergarten while I am an IT professional working in the local public school systems technology department. While we are still young we'd be looking for a quieter, more family oriented (or mature) neighborhood. Though being close to public transit or not TOO far from downtown or shops and eateries would be cool. Thoughts?

Without knowing the school district you're looking at, it's hard to give a recommendation. But there are lots of places that would give you easy access to the Max (light rail).

It runs from Hillsboro through to Gresham for east/west and up both I-5 and I-205 on the red and yellow lines. The new Green line goes into Clackamas down I-205 as well. WES goes between Wilsonville and Beaverton. My wife and I live on the far end of Hillsboro and she rides the Max into downtown Portland for her job almost every day. There do seem to be more park and rides on the west side of Portland though. Website is trimet.org if you want to check that out.

If you're looking for info on the west side of Portland, I may be able to help. There are some really nice neighborhood on the east side of the river too, just don't know the area well enough to point you in the right direction. :-)

What general area are you looking at? Hillsboro/Aloha/Beaverton, Portland proper, Tualatin, Lake Oswego, Clackamas, Gresham? Gonna make a big difference... lot of area to cover.

Well, we're looking to rent a single family house initially, so I would think some sort of property management group would be best.

Sorry to say, but I have no idea! Our trip out there will only be my second time visiting and my wife's first. I'm not super familiar with the city or it's suburbs, unfortunately. Where would I be closest to good paintball?! I've looked at houses in the NE side or Portland proper on craigslist and it LOOKED to be around what we were looking for, but I'm starting to feel overwhelmed! So much to learn!

There are some great neighborhoods in every side of the city.

Local Realtor would be a good start.

Welcome to Oregon!

I would start by finding out what area you and your wife will be working, and then start looking for a place in that general area. In my humble opinion, there are far more "good" places to live in Portland and surrounding areas than there are "bad" places. It just depends on what is important to you. Lightrail, bus service, walking distance to amenities, school district preferences and commute are all things I would look at when considering a move here.
