Phenomena that I observed are hardly stereotypes. There were 5 asians and myself, and then there was one asian and myself. Then that asian was by himself.

lol'd. Figured you be the person to ask this out of anyone here:

I need to take a Philosophy class next semester, would your recommend Critical Reasoning or a Symbolic Logic course?

let me know if half your opinions are going to be whatever Paul carter posted recently so I can save myself some time when reading your posts

So, I rented a car and drove 14+ hours yesterday for pretty much no reason. Was going way upstate for my buddy's bachelor party, turns out they changed the date(to a day i can't even make it) and no one bothered to call me. It's really on his brother who was organizing it, apparantly "I changed the date on facebook man..." is acceptable.

So I drove a couple of hours more to my parents, helped my dad out with his computer, and said "**** it" and drove all the way back home after. My mom sent me off with a couple of strip steaks just cause.

Also, I've been pretty damn sick all weekend. Developing a nice case of bronchitis. So all in all, just an AWESOME couple of days

wtf is a course in critical reasoning, and how would it not cover symbolic logic?

Sure ask Pelto, I don't have a degree in philosophy or anything

If they are intro-level courses, I'd say it all depends on the professor. I have no idea what would be covered in a "critical reasoning" class. Overall, I'd recommend symbolic logic if you want to gain an ability to break down logical arguments. But most people don't find the class "fun" or "interesting". I'm an exception, obviously, but I also majored in Phi.

My symbolic logic class was 300-level(ie most people in it were majors or wanted to torture themselves) so we got pretty deep into it. I'd ask the professors for the books used in the course or a syllabus or something to determine which class to take. That will let you know how deep into the fields they get.

I find my aspects of symbolic logic interesting. Though, I would say that the majority of people in my class would say that they find the class more challenging than they thought.

Not sure what a critical reasoning class would be over, critiquing logic employed by others?

It's an opinion I agree with, and something I have implemented ever since I stopped dong 5/3/1. Hell, even when I did do 5/3/1, I would often skip the deload weeks. Autoregulation is pretty important, if you ask me.

Totally forgot about you . They are both 2000 level but have no prerequisites so Im assuming intro level

Here are the course descriptions:

Critical Reasoning- "A study of the principles of correct reasoning: induction, deduction, formal and informal fallacies. Critical reasoning is excellent preparation for the LSAT and the reasoning portions of other examinations for graduate study."

Symbolic Logic- "A first course in symbolic logic designed to introduce students to formal systems of propositional and predicate logic. Logic is excellent preparation for the LSAT and the reasoning portions of other examinations for graduate study."

I've heard much better things about the Critical Reasoning professor so I am leaning towards that at the moment. I may just sign up for both and drop the least favorable of the two after we go over the syllabus

Personally, I'd rather deal directly with the formal system when it comes to learning logical reasoning and identifying fallacies. I feel like it helped me to understand them better.

However, as usual when it comes to intro courses, the professor makes the biggest difference. So I'd choose based on that for sure.
