Dark Intimidator ID
Hey all,
Back in HB 2007 this punk kid jumped the fence and made off with four of our Intimidators (mine included). Insurance covered the loss and we ended up catching him when he posted them for sale on here, gutted and part swapped. I didn't think much of it at the time but recently started looking for a similar Timmy to add to the stable. Here's what I knew: 2k5 Dark Intimidator, was reffered to as "sandblasted." I've only found one picture of anything comparable -
Do you guys know if this was a stock anno option or were guys getting this done back in the day? Anyone seen one up for grabs recently?
Thanks,
Will

Was probably referred to as "Sandblasted" because of the Dust finish that require the marker to be sandblasted to make it look like that.

They didn't come that way from the factory, I can tell you that much. All the standard factory colors that year were gloss.

I've seen a Edge Marq with that same 'sandblasted' finish, so I'd say it's plausible.

Weird that two were done up in the exact same sandblast back then. Guess I'll just have to figure out can do something comparable.
Thanks for the help guys!

sandblasted means the anno has been stripped off the marker 99% of the time with a sandblaster. I wouldnt recommend buying one as there is no protective layer on the gun, it will get dirty extremely fast and be very hard to clean, it will pit from raw aluminum exposure to the air/paint/oil/sweat, and if it was blasted with actual sand, it will be extremely hard to anno and will look like ****. the particles in sand embed themselves in the metal and contaminate the anno bath from what i understand. anytime a dust finish comes from the factory, it is beadblasted not sandblasted

Aluminum will only pit if it comes into contact with a stripping agent of some sort for too long a period of time. It can remain bare almost indefinitely without being anodized and it can be clean fairly easily. If and when it does oxidize it will appear like a white haze on the surface which can be polished off with alloy polish or even better, a fine rouge.
This finish was definitely NOT a factory variant and is aftermarket. If anyone did buy one a brand new one in a similar finish it would be safe to bet either Warped sent it out or made a special request with BLAST for them. I've never seen a new one like this and judging by the look of the aluminum, it looks to be bead blasted with no anodic coating which means it didn't come like that from the factory.

Eh, lasering a marker removes this protective layer and they seem to hold up very well. As long as the internals are anno'd so the orings seal and there's no wear, the marker can be raw. However, as you mentioned, it will require a rub down with some Isoprophyl alcohol from time to time to clean it.
If the Dark pictured above is like the Edge I referred to, it has anno on it. 'sandblast' is most likely just a name hung onto the finish because it's a clear heavy dust look resembling raw aluminum.

a raw sandblasted gun sitting in a sweaty dirty gearbag is a recipe for a ****ty looking gun. im pretty sure lazering only burns the dye out of the anno layer, however a stripped gun oxidizes over time regardless, so yeah it is similar to lazering. why not just anno it dust clear? solves the pains of trying to clean it.
