Anyone else excited as **** to see this? Apparently it's outrageously violent, the 3D is very well done, and the badassery is only interrupted by bits of incredibly dark humor. It seems to be every bit of what that god-awful Stallone movie SHOULD have been, but avoided entirely.
First straight up action movie I've gotten excited for in years.

Yeah I've noticed. Pretty much everyone that watched it at Comic Con left with a meter long erection. I don't think I've heard a bad thing about it so far.
Plus it comes out at the end of the week that Borderlands 2 hits shelves. I'll be all burned out from a solid 5 days of gaming and in need of some more super awesome futuristic head splitting.

God damn this movie is badass. The gore, the action, the dark one-liners from Dredd, even down to the different-gun modes that held true to the original fiction. Just, perfect.
Story does start to lull about halfway through, but it's almost a minor inconvenience to the overall badassery.

I'd been looking forward to the new Judge Dredd readaptation since I heard who was on board. So it opened friday and I went to see it with my buddies.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the production and aesthetic were great, the lighting was perfect, and it was a comfortable atmosphere. I actually saw it in 3D as well which is something I'm against for the majority, but not all, movies. It was well done in that regard too. Not campy or stupid like most 3D films (though fortunately this was native and not post-converted).
At heart, the premise is very similar to that of The Raid: Redemption (the Indonesian film) in that the protagonist has to battle his way through a large, criminally-controlled building, and the vast majority of the film takes place there. But Dredd was scripted ages before The Raid was, so it's no rip-off in any sense.
I think it will probably be BEST received by fans of the 2000AD comics, or people who are at least somewhat familiar with the franchise or the world that the Judges are set in, only in that you will appreciate the details more, and one can then see how truly faithful the adaptation is. All the little nuances are more meaningful. Karl Urban does an incredible job as Dredd. One of the most difficult aspects of the franchise adaptation is bringing to the screen a main character who never once reveals his face above the mouth, and whose personal character arc is not much of an arc at all. But they manage to execute gracefully with the arc of a secondary protagonist who plays her part very well. The subtlety of the writing is more profound the more you reflect on it.
But even without any prior knowledge of the franchise world, they do a great job of bringing everyone up to speed in a natural and organic way, so there shouldn't be any hiccups or wont for understanding. It was done deftly and in a smart fashion. Even as I write this, I'm realizing and appreciating more and more about it as I'm reflecting on how well they put it all together in that regard.
But yeah, I REALLY hope this film grosses enough to warrant a sequel. Fortunately it had a low enough budget so that it doesn't need huge profits to make up the deficit, and I think Mega-City One looks incredibly interesting and I think there's a lot more to be expounded upon in future volumes.

And the main reason I urge people to go out and see this is because despite critical acclaim and having garnered positive reviews, it's tanking at the box office right now. That's due, in my opinion, to a poor marketing job and a small target audience. And because the movie industry is just that, an industry, whether or not they move forward with a series/franchise often depends on how much money the film grosses. So:
It's tanking because of the ComiCon curse. Every time a studio has an advanced showing for a movie at ComiCon it does terrible at the box office. The same happened to Watchmen and Scott Pilgrim.
