I bought an Ion without a board for $35. Added a stock board which I added a brighter LED to, some comfortable aftermarket grips, a matching 14" AA barrel and a brand new NDZ Slik Blade trigger, SP 360 QEV, CCM Low-rise feedneck, SFT Regulator and ASA along with a Deadlywind Bolt kit I found. Total came to $88.
1. Was a phenomenal beginner gun. I showed it to local people who were hesitant to play and they began imagining at how insane high-end markers could be.
2. It was then quickly snapped up for $140. (They offered $200, but I didn't have the balls to take the offer so I lowered it to something more reasonable.
The gun was capable of high rates of fire and still feel smooth. Had no dropoff and most of the parts purchased for it were under $10 a piece and were mainly salvaged.
The inherent gripe with Ions is their poor tolerances, but that's also what makes it such a phenomenal bargain banger. You can grab beat up, yet extremely high-end aftermarket components for it for less than a bag of paint and watch how drastic the difference becomes each time. They're fully customizable and that's a massive reason (as well) as to why they were such (and still are) the most sold paintball marker series on the face of the planet.
If I recall correctly, more Ions were purchased than every single DYE and Planet Eclipse gun...
My biggest gripe with Ions is the fact that the stock Ion doesn't have Bolt Out Back, and doing even routine maintenance is INCREDIBLY annoying. They shoot just fine, but I hate them because of that one thing. I like the Ion XE, and had one for quite some time.
You wanna see why Ions get the reputation they have? Here it is:
professionall paintball lot must see!!! - $600 (douglasville)

I made him an offer because I wanted the tanks and what I thought was a Freak set(turns out to be just one insert). This was the reply:
It's a pro set man I did so many upgrades with the gun it's like 300 bucks for gun man I played for team I know the prices and tank is nitro 98 and the pants it's self is like 70 and the tinted mask is like 70 bucks and freak barrel is like 50 bucks man I'm giving best deal out there
I offered him a hundred bucks and told him he can keep the Ion. All I do with them is trade them for a box of paint(seriously). Once I found out that the Freak kit was just one insert and the tank was out of Hydro I retracted that offer.
I just got this PM a few minutes ago. I sold an SP8(Ion with body kit) to a gentleman in Canada. It got there in great shape, he is very happy and loves it. The marker was pretty much new and shot fantastic. He did a little modification to it and sent this message to me:
Hello there! I finished my mod on your SP8! Yes, I have now a ripclip installed! see this link to see the result: http:
I had also to disassemble all the gun, I reassembled th egun but now I have a big leak inside in the middle. Is it possible that by installing the bangos , one tube is just not fixed correctly??? :S I will have to dismantle all the gun again to see where i sthe problem. Ciao
Now this man isn't the normal Ion owner. He is respectful, intelligent and very polite. He was just curious about what he may have done to cause the leak. This was my response, and 90% of the time this is the way to fix Ion problems:
This is kind of common with Ions and Ion based markers. When you take it apart there are 3 small diameter air lines attached to the solenoid. Many times they get damaged/pulled off during disassembly. Pull the body apart but don't disconnect anything. While you are looking at the solenoid, slowly screw the air into the ASA. As soon as it starts feeding air you will hear the leak. Put your finger over each air hose and fitting until you find where the leak is. If the line is damaged, simply repair/replace it. Sometimes there is enough slack that you can cut the damaged part of the tube off and push the original tube back on to the fitting. If you need, you can call me at
Yeah I shop Craigslist for good deals from little kids that think their high end brand new guns are broken, and everything involving an ion says pro paintball gun worth 1000$ selling for 500 with halo hopper and 48/3000, rarely having an upgrade, but whatever, kids will be kids
like others are saying. Ions are great guns, just dont fix them until they break. If they're shooting and not leaking don't take them apart. I have an ion that was last lubed 3 years ago and the kid uses it and it has never gave him problems. Still shoots great too
Boris- heavy is good, heavy is reliable, if it does not work you can hit them with it.
I got my XE a couple years ago with CP reg, CP on/off ASA, CP clamp feedneck, CP 16 one piece barrel, CP trigger, Virtue board, Virtue eyes, Virtue QEV, and SP Firebolt.... all for under $160. You really cant beat the peformance you get out of it for the price. I have friends with Etek 3's, and they even agree the XE shoots nicer.
In comparison to my upped DM5, its lighter, and can definitely keep up...
The only problem with the ions were the solenoid. At high ROF it couldn't quite keep up velocity wise so it would drop like 10-20 fps at a high rof. The only way you could notice it was if you shot it at its close to max range, which you would never really do in speedball.
