Look. The only reason you will ever see manufactures produce small displacement 4 cylinder cars is when restricted by racing class. Take the e30 m3 vs. Merc 190e. Both 4 cylinder racers that bumped displacement everytime they where allowed. From an engineering stand point it doesn't make sense NOT to add displacement or cylinders. So if your just into cars as a hobby and you don't have millions invested in a racing class forcing certain peramaters on you : its completely moronic to use a small i4 and think your "cool ".
Don't even get me started on the fact most of these kids are using a wrong wheel drive (front).

EDIT: snow make one point where a small displacement motor has a bountiful perk over a larger motor. Strictly in relation to racing. Let me save you from the whole "weight " arguement. It wont work in your favor
