What's a good price for paint?

I've seen paint go for cheap, like $20 a case, then cases that are like $70+. What do you pay for paint normally? Do you buy at the fields? Personally, I feel like that's a total rip off...

I buy pretty decent stuff from my local store. Sports Authority and Walmart have decent paint for around $30, most of the time they work fire but every now and then you get a ****ty box.

I like good quality paint. My home field GRC Paintball sells Valken Redemption fire $55 a case which is actually a pretty sweet deal, considering it usually goes for about $65. I usually end up with extra paint and Redemption has the best packing out there. I shoot pump most of the time so shelf life is important to me as well as good breakage, both of which you get with it. Most indoor fields charge about $65 on average but almost all fields are FPO so either pay or stay home. For woodsball I still buy top shelf because cheap stuff usually is terrible for the wildlife or takes months to degrade. Eco-fill is BS, the shell still never seems to disappear. If nature is kind enough to let me play there it's my responsiblity to leave it as unscathed as possible.

How is it though that paint is marked up so much? What does it cost to make 2000 paintballs and put them in a box at cost? They must be making a killing off of paintballs alone.

What is your rationale for claiming that paint is "marked up so much"? Commercial markup on most items is between 300 to 500%.

There is a capital investment, and probably no real profits until the 3rd year. Along with annual cost of items like overhead, leases, utility costs, logistics and marketing. They probably make less than you think. They also most likely fall within obama's higher tax brackets. Don't vote obama if you want cheaper paint.

I pay $68 for a case of the lowest grade Heat you can get at my field. $78 for a case of Marbelizer and $88 for a case of All-Star. I wouldn't complain about the prices you guys pay, some of us aren't lucky enough for decent paint prices.

Well seeing as how when I play in Canada the field paint (usually mid to lower shelf) ranges from $100 to $110, I don't think we have alot to cry about here. And they play paintball more up there and shoot even more paint when they do. We're actually not paying that much. And what if we were? Paint sales are what move this entire sport forward. Field owners need the markup to cover their costs and make some profit. Field fees are cheap because they make money on paint. Really think about what fields have to cover for maintenance, employees, cleanup. Some field owners are lucky to have a full tank of gas to get home after their expenses. And kids cry about how paint is more than their allowance? Pfffttt....

Yeah my field is the only one around for 2hrs away in each direction so they pretty much **** everyone on pricing AND they don't even have airball. I have to drive 2hrs away just to practice on an airball field haha

What would it cost to make paintballs in mass production with a group of people invested?

I imagine if you have the capital you could start it and make profits pretty quick if you marketed yourself well.

You imagine wrong most likely. I think the industry has solidified a great deal the last few years. Maybe to much for any new entrants into that particular market.

There's a shop around here that makes their own paint, it's awful.

What do you mean solidified? Companies have dropped off, sure, but as far as I can tell there is no patent on the paintball. It comes down to recipe and production cost.

Well basically there is a lot of consolidation right now. Everyone seems to be merging with or buying out competitors. Retrenchment if you will. And I haven't heard of any new company(admittedly I didn't look hard at the google) making paint in a long time. And if they did they would have to compete against companies that would probably(most likely) have economy of scale and supply advantages at this point.

There isn't as much room for new entrants like there was even 5 years ago. Things have solidified if you will.

I leave open the possibility for someone to do it but I would imagine it would be cost and risk prohibitive.

Around a million bucks give or take, How about you just start sending money to me and I will see what I can do, and in about 3 years I will start sharing profits with those who invested
