High mileage 4Runner

So I sold my truck about four months ago and have been needing to get myself something that'll get me too and from class and work. Nothing really fancy, something with 4WD is pretty important for the occasional snow and what not this winter, also a good AC during these hot summer months is crucial. I'm going to look at a '96 4Runner SR5 today, it has 200,000 miles on it and it's listed for $4,400. My question to you guys is: would you get one with that many miles on it? I've read a couple other places and have seen mixed responses. Some say it should have a lot of life left and others say they wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. If everything were to check out and no major mechanical flaws presented themselves, would you buy it?

Thanks.

If Diesel: Yes.

If Gas: No.

Simple as that.

Speaking of which, saw a merc from the 60s or 70s on CL for sale near here a year ago with 420,000 miles on it.

When I went to see it it had 420,007. "LIES!"

My father in law just sold his 98 4Runner SR5 Limited with 219,xxx miles for $4000. It was getting driven anywhere from 100-250 miles per day for business. I wouldn't hesitate to take it across the country and back; in fact I kind of regret not buying it from him.

Definitely have it checked out by an independent shop or a trusted mechanic before buying to avoid making a mistake. They're great vehicles imo; others would agree I'm sure.

i wouldn't worry about the engine. my mom's bf has a bunch of toyotas sitting in his yard with 350k+ miles that were all on original, non-rebuilt drivetrains that ran fine when he parked them. the rest of the vehicle couldn't keep up. so long as brakes, tires, shocks, other maintenance, etc. was done i wouldn't hesitate to buy a high mileage vehicle. hell, i bought my ranger with 236k on the clock, but it doesn't get driven much, only as a work horse.

So it didn't pan out, however there's another one in the area with 213K miles. It's an '02, clean as hell, and it's supercharged. Still the original owner and they're asking 8K. If it had under 200K I know I'd snatch it up in a second but I get leery with the high mileage. I don't know...

Get something with less than 200k miles then?

Also, what area of the country are you driving again?

Also, the sticky is pretty much for this kind of thread.

Didn't know about the sticky, sorry, don't come around too much anymore. I live in Northern California about 1.5 hours north of Sacramento, family has a cabin about 1-2 hours from the Oregon border in the mountains (snows there) - that's the main reason for the 4WD.
