making money is not congruent with generating money. If your site is generating money (ads most likely) in any form then pay the photographer. No one is going to say, "Hey, I like that background image. I wonder who took it? Let me do some investigating and try to get that guy to take my pictures."
Just like you say, for $30 you can go do it yourself, so why would exposure help a photographer if there is someone else who can "just go do it themselves" or have a friend, aunt, whoever else do it?
You're reasoning is that they will get exposure, exposure will generate them money, but sadly most people will have your same thinking after seeing a photographer charge money and their first response would be, "$150 . . . I can just have someone else do it."
So the only benefit for someone to put a large BG image on your site is if they are paid for it. Even if it is just $30.
