Hey wanted to see if any of our photogs would be willing to offer the use of one of their photos as a background image for a live paintball stream. If you want more info please contact me via pm otherwise please post photos you would be willing to let me use in this thread.

Best bet would be to email a known league photographer with info like dimensions/resolution needed, licensing terms, and the amount you're willing to pay for the invested years of experience and thousands of dollars of gear and travel used in order to create the photo.

well:
1. Is the paintball stream generating money.
2. If yes then just commission what J. has said above.

If no then just pony up $30 at a stock site and get a commercially licensed photo.

Stream isn't making me money. This was a way for unknown photos to get some exposure. For 30 bucks I can dig out my cameras and take a few shots

Exposure doesn't pay the bills, and sites normally take up to 2 years to get a consistent traffic flow. Even if you did get 10,000 people a day, that would do nothing for the photographer to get more teams at events, advertising doesn't work like that. If you think you're such a skilled photographer then by all means pay $150 (?) for a media pass and hit up an event.

making money is not congruent with generating money. If your site is generating money (ads most likely) in any form then pay the photographer. No one is going to say, "Hey, I like that background image. I wonder who took it? Let me do some investigating and try to get that guy to take my pictures."

Just like you say, for $30 you can go do it yourself, so why would exposure help a photographer if there is someone else who can "just go do it themselves" or have a friend, aunt, whoever else do it?

You're reasoning is that they will get exposure, exposure will generate them money, but sadly most people will have your same thinking after seeing a photographer charge money and their first response would be, "$150 . . . I can just have someone else do it."

So the only benefit for someone to put a large BG image on your site is if they are paid for it. Even if it is just $30.
