Looking to buy my first spyder.
Hey guys, you will probably shake your head at some of these questions but im new! I'm just getting into paintball and was wondering if you would encourage me to buy a Spyder Xtra for $50. I have read some reviews on them and they don't sound bad. The only problem I am having is the guy doesn't know what year the gun is and someone said the only way I can mod it is with the year. Any way to ID these guns?
Thanks!

Understanding the year make and model of anything makes it easier to upgrade, but not impossible. At first glance you could purchase the following without knowing the year;
Detent, feed neck, bolt, e-grip, e-hopper, barrel, drop forward, valve, and a beaver tail
Speaking of tail, the one on that marker is terribly bent. you can see it on the back in picture number 3. Being a Spyder you have the ability to find compatible parts from many other Spyders and clones. Good starting marker but certainly not for the long haul without upgrades, mods, and money.
I personally would pay the money for it but then again I'm a sucker for anything that can shoot a paint filled sphere. I probably would buy a homemade PVC marker if it was accurate.

The beaver tail on that one looks bent either from a fall or it has been dropped hard.
Why not just buy a new Spyder since the pricing for a new one is not bad.

Yea $50 isn't bad but by the time you get a etrigger and other parts you could have picked up a newer gun that also runs at lower pressure. Check out ansgear.com they have a spyder rs listed for under $70.

Not a bad gun, but I'd pony up the additional cash for the Xtra.
It has a proper foregrip and an aluminum frame.
It would shoot exactly the same as the Xtra, but be much more comfortable to use, and a bit more durable.
There are some nice package deals available too if you look around.

Not sure if they ship to Canada, though.

I still say you can't beat a Spyder. I've been using Tippmanns for a while, but they do get expensive to replace parts on and their durability is going down the tubes pretty quick. Spyders use common o-rings, they're serviced at any paintball store, and they never go out of style!
I think your mind has been made up not to buy that one, and I think that's wise. Look around here on the B/S/T, there's tons of people selling stuff. There's someone on the Tippmann forum selling a pair of Spyder Compacts for $60...
I'd look at a newer Spyder, as you are. Maybe an MR-1 or a more modern Victor. I have friends with Victor IIs and they're happy with them. The MRX is not to my liking. I had one for a short while. Never shot straight. Ever. Even with premium paint, ideal conditions, and fresh HPA tank, that thing would not hit the broadside of a barn. The Hammer-7 and whatever the other new magfed AR-looking thing promises to be a little better, but I have my doubts.
tl;dr, Get a modern Spyder for $100.
