That's not even that bad to be honest. My friend's GTI is completely tucked and he DDs it.

The 2.5 is a MUCH better motor, as long as it is the EJ255 or EJ257.

It's not much hassle at all.

By the way I've been meaning to ask, what is this? A valve that opens the exhaust from the midpipe instead of it going all the way to the axleback?

This is the car its on http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/cto/3195374083.html

do you have any idea what is involved? i don't really want to spend more than a day or two on the swap. i kinda figured that the 2.0's have problems by the crazy price all the wrecking yards want for them

Pulling the old motor, replace engine mounts, new seals, connections, idk really I've never done one.

Yes, I'm very familiar with what it involved. I've been a part of a few swaps.

It's not that difficult because it's a motor that's still designed for that vehicle, more or less. The overall size and shape is the same so it's not really that bad. It's not like swapping an LS1 into an S13.

Went and hung out with awk last night. Poor STI I wish I knew what was up with it. It moves now but it is acting like a complete **** tard.

Rough idling, making power but **** power, sounds awful in idle and under throttle, smells rich as hell.

We replaced the spark plugs but we think it is still misfiring because it is giving us CELs again. Possibly a spark plug boot. However, awk was a noob and dropped a wrench down under the front part of the engine bay so I reached down by the up-pipe and was trying to find it. When I pulled my hand out after touching the U-P my hand was covered in thick black soot. Since awk tried to unbolt his U-P I think the gasket got ****ed and he now has a massive exhaust leak. combined with the plugs and whatnot I this might be the issue.

Thoughts? Would a loose U-Pipe cause a bad idle, running rich, and just poor everything?

It was good to see you though

I'm almost positive it's my coil packs since I never even moved the turbo or up pipe bolts.

Even so, I can't afford replacements.

The 2.5 you're referring to that's half the price is 99.999% likely to be one of the non-turbo ones. Probably an ej251 or 253--wouldn't even bother. More money and hassle in the end.

Get a new 205 or save up more for a superior 207, 255 or 257. Not sure off the top of my head, but there would probably need some wiring work done with the avcs at the least if you want that (you should want that....) I'm not very familiar with a bugeye WRX to STI swap. I'm sure there's some other minor incompatibilities. Also keep in mind you'll probably want to upgrade/replace your transmission down the road.

A 255 or 257 would run for $2500 at the very least, and at that price, it's probably missing some parts or has high mileage. Be prepared to spend more than that to properly complete the swap.
