Artwork Portfolio

Hey,

Just doing this because I'm bored and felt like I could use some constructive critcism on my work. Been drawings since I was a baby - I jump around alot in regards to styles and techniques - my ultimate goal is to be tattooing in the next few years as that has always been one of my absolute favorite mediums for so many reason.
Most drawings done with a mixture of prismacolor and fabercastel markers and pens on mixed media paper.

work in progress

fun with letters:

You've got some impressive work here man... Quite a few of these pieces are 100% technically sound in terms of how clean your markmaking is. I don't have much to contribute in terms of criticism (I really like your work) other than maybe to get more practice in with your lettering ("Schmoo" piece)- it's not bad, but I definitely think it could be better regarding the letter "relationships" (positive/negative space choices). You said you want to be tattooing soon- I think your sketches/ pieces reinforce that goal. Do you have any experience using a machine?

Hey man thanks for actually checking my stuff out ! I have very little experience with tattoo machines besides getting tattooed by them lol I own 4 actually that my fianc gave to me for Christmas a few years back but I'm scared to teach myself the wrong way and put myself even further behind the curve . My plan is to really try to pursue and apprenticeship once our wedding is passed .
Thanks for the comments on my drawings - I spend a lot of time seeing what other artists and a lot of great tattooers are doing and try to put my own spin on it ... The one thing I really hate is that I don't have any background in painting or color theory and I don't think the prismacolor markers look that great.. Very streaky .

I mean, watching experienced tattooers do work provides more insight than most people think if you're passionate about learning. Sure, doing your own work is another thing, but is there some way of practicing before you actually put permanent ink on someone? I've always kinda wondered...

And yeah, feeding your eyes inspiration is something that we as artists have to constantly do if we really are passionate about a creative field. It's never too late to start checking out color theory or different media like painting, be it oil, acrylic, or watercolor... If you're curious about it and you end up enjoying it, that will show through in your work (like it does with the designs you have posted). Like we discussed in my thread, I think being well-rounded is important, but as you said, a certain level of concentration in one or two mediums is equally important. Keep busy man, good looks

thanks man, much appreciated.

there are alot of different ways to practice before permanently inking someone, but none of them are exactly the same .. there is the old grapefruit trick where you tattoo a grapefruit (the skin mimics human skin), if you get juice leaking you're running too long on your needles (usually), and it is a curved surface like a majority of the body is.
they also offer practice pads that are essentially pieces of fake skin..they have thick and thin versions depending on your preference, usually newer tattoo apprentices will start thick and work down to thin
there are also companies like A Pound of Flesh that create almost lifelike body parts for tattooing purposes..

all are great options but all of them fall short of being real skin. and in all cases, technique is everything and i have none of that.
still, it is my dream to do it one day and not have to hustle in the job i am in now.

Ive messed around with paints lately but I am finding I know even less about them than I thought. My fiance got me a book on watercolor but I havent had time to check it out much.. ill definitely keep at it.
