2006 eclipse gt tick

alright owned the car for around a year now, talk about a ****ton of problems

purchased with 68k miles

2000 miles later the clutch goes out, leaves me stranded in alabama.

I hitchhike back to michigan, pay $1500 to get a new one put in.

The super awesome alabama mechanic managed to install the clutch backwards

4000 miles later it's toast again.

Get it done for 1000.

So it's had a tick ever since then, check engine light has been on but i assumed that was due to the ram air intake.

The tick is pretty constant, it's not a knock. I had a 98 camaro that had a knock at 30,000 miles because the jackass before me never changed the oil, it leaked coolant into the oil and was done for.

Took it to 3 mechs to check, one told me it was loose clutch assembly, one told me it was a sticky lifter, and the last one told me the 5th cylinder was misfiring (he's the one who did the second clutch right and ironically enough the only one who ran a diagnostic).

I guess that could be a coil or spark plug, unfortunately the 5th spark plug is on the back of the block.

So here's my question, could it be anything else, and how hard is it to get to the back plugs on this car? I've had a bent plug up front before (god knows how that happened) which was right up front to replace but i'm not sure how much a job it'd be to replace the 5th cylinder plug.

any help is appreciated

-zech

Try to get a video to show the sound. Lifter tick shouldn't trigger a check engine light so I'm assuming it's something else. Lots of places read the codes for free.

Edit: Does the sound go away after a few minutes when the engine warms up?

Google tells me it's something with the valves. Some people on the interwebz suggest it might actually be normal for that car.

I'd suggest what gunner said to be the best option for you at this point though.

If you've never done spark plugs you could google how to do them and see if it's something you want to attempt. If you don't have to take half the car apart to get to them, it shouldn't be very difficult for you.

Lifter tick is super common on 6g motors. Also spark plugs suck on those motors. Transverse mounted v6 with the intake plenum mounted above the rear bank of cylinders...

havn't checked this in a few days. I don't have money for a dealer, they always overcharge. But yeah the rear line of plugs in like on the back of the engine. i'm going in for a diagnostic when i take the m5 in on tuesday and i'll have a video/info up then.

thanks

if you have a miss fire on the diagnostic you should probaly fix that first. scince the sparkplug is in a hard spot to get to pop the boot off another plug see if they look simalar if not change that spark plug and see if it goes away (if you replace one you should replace them all). if it doesnt fix the light try wires then go from there, but the clicking you hear is more than likely a valve im going to guess on the 5th cylinder probaly caused by your missfire.
