you should also get the bird a mate- love birds do better in pairs. Some feathers will NOT grow back- there are different types of feathers on a bird. If the bird is old enough and had gone through its infant molt and has adult feathers losing feathers at this stage is a BAD thing. It can be due to stress like the other two dudes said.. its more than most likely is stress since you did leave it alone for awhile. But you also need to worry about boredom, mal-nutrition and allergy. Also, if it has pulled primary feathers off of its chest then make sure it doesn't get an infection in the bare spots.

A bird will pull feathers off its chest if it is trying to lay eggs, and its female (obviously). The bare chest provides direct body heat to the eggs, making it easier to rear them.
A bird will also pull feathers in stressfull situations, the situation you described is VERY stressfull to a lovebird. It needs lots of attention. Unfortunately, some birds who start plucking feathers to the point that they are bare (like 50-60%) will not stop, and it becomes a life long issue.
One thing is as the baby feathers begin to grow back, they are extremely rich and tasty, so a bird will pluck it and actually like the taste of its new feathers, and keep on plucking at them. Eventually bloodflow will stop to the feathers , and they will just not grow back anymore.
The only way to ensure they grow back is to get a bird collar. you can ask your vet. On the other hand you can pray that you get lucky, and it stops.
I suggest 3 things. Attention!!! Minimize its stress, quiet places and familiar surroundings. And most importantly diet. Put it on a vitamin regiment,, Vitamine A is very important for healthy feathers. (get bird vitamines from any petstore, ZuPrene is available at pet mart.)
You may also try a UV light. UV light actually provides a catalyst for vitamines in birds. UV = good.
I hope this helps, feel free to email me if you like. Ive been through this, do not let your stress over your bird affect your relatoinship with it. Birds MIMIC your attitude just like a 2 year old.
