Get a mirrorless with a 35mm or something and toss it in your bag. Good shots with a small logistical profile.

I really like the PEN lineup by Oly. You take a hit on IQ but it's super small and way better IQ than a p&s. plus you get all the settings of a dslr. Either that or the G series from Canon. I had the ep1 but found that the hit in IQ I'd rather just carry around a small dslr (d5100 or rebel w/kit lens)

Those Olympus PEN cameras look like fun things to mess around with, I may look into a used one.

I picked one up. Fun little camera, good for shooting while out with friends.

I don't have any available but here's a FB quality of a high ISO photo in what seemed almost dark in the shadows when I was in there. They are definitely nice to carry around and if you can find a used one they are about the same price as point and shoots now (ep1 I got for $234 and then sold it to a friend for $200) It has in body stabilization which helps in low light. A point and shoot w/o flash wouldn't be able to handle the scene:

Hmmmm, not bad. I have a film camera that I could carry around, but I'm lazy and wouldn't want to pay to have my film developed/develop it myself. I think I'll look into an E-PL1. Is there much difference between the others or is the E-PL1 a pretty capable camera? Right now, I'm seeing them on eBay for about $230 with a lens.

I think the newer ones are slimmer and might eek out better low light capabilities. Just figure out what models you want to look at and find comparison reviews. I got the ep1 refurb because when they first came out they were $500 and now they are right around $200 w/kit lens. I've also had success at taking a lens converter and using my canon lenses on it. I think a converter is like $20. A lot of the people getting them immediately buy a pancake lens and love it for going out/street/just documenting life.

really clever idea
does the lens converter maintain the ability to autofocus?

I learned something today..I really suck at shooting film. For some reason everything I shoot hand held at 1/60 on DSLR is relatively sharp at least for walk around stuff, but it's blurred to **** in my negatives with my k1000. Even some of my 1/125 stuff, and this is at 28mm..I'm confused.

nope. But the DOF is pretty wide on it that small of a sensor. If I needed to shoot at like f8 I just do the DOF preview while on a canon and twist off so it locks the aperture then put it on the converter. Otherwise you'd be shooting wide open. Also, you are ALWAYS on live-view so you can adjust the DOF accordingly.

This was done with the 70-200 f4L with the converter. I believe the m4/3 is 2x crop factor. So 400mm @ f4 I think (from memory)

w/kit lens and one of the "miniature" settings on the camera. I really liked the .jpg colors of olympus. So just for everyday stuff you can have good images:

I think I'd like a xpro1 or something like it. However, 1g could go toward something much more useful since I already have 2 dslr's and a film camera I never touch.

Why don't you just save the 250 for a dslr? Buy 30d or something.

hmm... interesting.

The reason i ask is because the new canon 40mm lens won't actually focus at all unless you have power going into the lens. You can turn the focus ring all you want, but without power going into the motor, the lens won't actually do anything

The focus ring is super smooth and easy to turn, because it's being electronically assisted. If you try with the camera off, you get nothing.
