modded spyders thread

I decided to start this thread due to the amount of people who like to modify their spyders. Spyders are cheap, easy to mill, and have the potential to look amazing. These diy mods usually cost nothing and can turn a spyder into a gun you can show off. This thread is to post pictures of your diy modified spyder and for discussion about modifying them. This includes halfbacking, frame move ups, mini's spyders, spumps, custom milling, etc.

To start things off, here's my recently modded spyder:

I did the halfbacking job with a hack saw and some sandpaper/sanding foam. then I replaced the connecting pin with a longer cut-down nail to make the new cocking pin, it kind of looks like a timmy bolt now.

Ill have to dig out my spyder... I'm positive I have a T-boarded spyder set up with dual ball detents and eyes that did ~20 bps. That thing was filthy.

Also, you should low pressure mod your Spyder.

Actually, that's already been done, this gun has all of the ottermods as a matter of fact. It had a reg on it, but it now has an expansion chamber since i put my reg on another gun. It was so quiet and consistent with that reg.

Here's the spump I did for a friend. Still needs some love but it works
And yes I know it is technically not a spyder
I milled the hammer and body. Made a delrin pump handle, turned a block to extend the bolt back, and polished the bolt very lightly, not enough to take off all the anno, but enough to really smooth it. (not that you can tell since it's covered in lube).

How do you cock the striker now that the bolt's not connected to it?

did you slot the striker? how did you do it so that you can move the pump handle back to its original place without pulling the trigger?

Yes, they did long ago. Ram sleeve was a bit longer than the body so you didn't have to drill for the barbs.

All you have to do is mill a slot in the hammer (striker). Start with the hole already in it and extend it all the way through the face of the hammer. same thing you do if you want to halfblock an autococker. Then the linkage pin is now a cocking pin. I didn't feel like taking it out for the picture

What tool did you use? I used a drill to try to make mine sode cocking.... i broke 3 bits and barely took the anodization of the striker, those things are hard.

The best way seems to be using a cutting wheel (such as a one with a dremel) the striker is made of hardened steel (or very close to it) and will only break bits of lesser or equal strength. For a dremel, the brown cutting discs will work, but you'll need alot of them. The best ones to use are the reinforced black carbide discs.

A bridgeport mill. HSS two flute end mill, it took like 3 passes.

I still have a bit of a to-do list: general body milling, a return spring, washer for the bolt extender, better way to connect the pump arm, under cocking kit, then probably a nice powder coat. If I get around to it ever

I'll secure a posting here quick that I can edit as I mod. Only hardcore mod I've done to a Spyder/Spyder clone is milling down a cocking rod to use a rear-cocking anti-chop bolt in a top-cocking gun. Just some simple lathe work, couple passes with the tool and it's done.
I suppose another mod was modding one girl's valve to use a lower pressure to re-cock, making it more air-efficient. Again, some lathe work and the careful application of a drillpress and bench grinder.

Every other mod I've done has been drop-in. New bolts, new triggerframes, etc.
The current plan is to half-back and spump my Viewloader Triton II. Just waiting for a good pump kit that's threaded correctly.
Noah

Those weren't Spimmy kits. They turned a Spyder or clone into a FASOR (Forward Air Spring Operated Return). I had two T1s and loved those guns!

I've modded a Spyder or two in my lifetime...

I even created what I believe to be the first Ego/Spyder feedneck. It was back in 07 or so and suggested by Shunut. A year later, a company started making the Spyder adapter for the Ego feedneck. I really missed the boat on this one!

Anyway, it's written up in my Spimmy tutorial (look at my sig).

Also is written up in a tutorial (see also in sig).

That would be one heck of an upgrade, i would rather convert to fasor than get a lightweight striker or high flow valve any day.
