Anyone else playing around with the windows 8 preview right now?

I'm loving the new interface so far.

I'm really, really, really not looking forward to having to cope with Server 2012.

It's nice on a touch-screen device, but metro is pretty worthless with a keyboard and mouse. The fact that you can't switch back to the Vista/7 style Start menu sucks, too. Remembering how many people *****ed up a storm when XP came out because the Start menu changed, this is not going to go well.

They should just release the new explorer stuff (task manager is pretty neat, and the copy/paste file management is cool as well) as a service pack or something for W7.

What? You can get rid of the metroUI and go back to a more "traditional" windows interface with a start menu...

Looking at that article, a jailbreak isn't going to cut it if they're completely removing the code.

Hey Microsoft, I'm a PC, I actually do things with a computer besides look at pictures of cats on the internet, remember?

Meh. Either someone will come out with a simple fix for it, or people will keep using win7. Either way, MS isn't going to sell nearly as many copies of 8 as they did 7, I suspect.

While it does take some getting used to, I have actually come to like the new "start" screen metro UI. I've found myself searching for my desktop apps from metro and have found it to be a little, if not a lot, faster and intuitive as you keep using it.

Sure it's annoying as first, guess it's just human nature to hate change.

Plus the new trackpad support for laptops will help navigate around metro a little easier, but for us desktop folks it's still a step backward unless microsoft comes out with an apple like magic mouse. (Which is still bad considering we'd be forced to buy an accessory to justify a smooth experience.)

I think it works great on mobile devices. I tried a couple themes on the latest jailbreak, then went back to the simple iPhone UI with useful tweaks... because themes lag at times. The Windows 8 theme was one of the UI's I liked since it works in both portrait and landscape. Not sure how I will like it on the PC... but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

So I downloaded the release preview, and I have to say I won't be feeling the need to switch. There are some things that have been added that are good, but on the whole the interface seems asinine, even for a touchscreen device. The fact that you have to make multiple actions just to shutdown the computer is incredibly thick. Not having the option of reducing the start menu screen such that it doesn't take up your entire screen is also stupid. This is most definitely designed for tablets, and only tablets.

I will say, it is very nice to see the "go up one folder" button again. Whoever thought up the idea to get rid of it in the first place deserves a good dicking.

Truth, I miss that little guy. Then again, being able to click folder names in the address bar is kinda the same thing, and almost easier at times. Or, when in doubt, Alt + [up arrow].

Staying with WIn 7 till win 9 it seems.

I actually like it. Can't wait to try it on one of the convertible x86 tablets.
