the correct term is venomous, but in the industry they are called "hots".
though some people get the voided of venom though this isn't the place to talk about that issue.

Correct!
Poisonous = Bad if you bite it
Venomous = Bad if it bites you
And no, I'm not a fan of venomoids either.

How does one acquire a king cobra? I'm assuming you're a breeder?

I'm not a breeder, but I had a permit from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept to keep dangerous exotic reptiles. I used to have a collection that would rival most zoos, and used to do educational displays and such on the side to support my "habit."
However, with my schedule and travel producing paintball events coast-to-coast it simply came down to a choice. Reptiles were a hobby and paintball was my career. So now All I have is a pair of western diamondback rattlers (one is the albino in the picture).
I miss my cobras.

from everything i've read king cobra's are a ***** to keep, they get big and don't seem to do well most of the time.
if you are serious about owning a hot snake copper heads and water moccasins are usually recommended "starters". but i wouldn't suggest getting into that unless you are very serious with several years of experience with snakes.
i've never messed with venomous snakes, but i did a fair bit of research at one time. obviously i still lake the knowledge of viperscenarios. and actually i just wouldn't recommend to anyone on a paintball site to get one.

When you are ready to get your first hot snake go out and find yourself a mentor to teach you proper tecniques and protocols.
Then choose a non-venomous snake with the regular characteristics of the hot snake you're interested in. Set up a locking tank just like you would for your hot. Get the proper handling equipment such as hooks, tongs, shift boxes, baggers, tubes, and anything else you may end up needing with a hot snake.
Now, spend at least a year treating THAT snake like it is the hot you're interesting in keeping. The first time you get tagged REALLY consider your what you've been thinking of doing. Think of the time off of work, the hospital stay, the possible permanent disfigurement and/or disability.
I'm not advocating or promoting ownership of venomous snakes. It's dangerous and could cost you your life. However, for some, the fascination of hots is irresistible.
But my best advice is just don't do it.
But you are right about king cobras. They are definitely a handful. I raised her from a neonate of less than a foot long, and she was over nine feet long when I rehomed her. They are by far the most intelligent snake on the planet. When you look into their eyes you can just see that there are things going in in their head.

kind of why i backed off, i used to know wayne hill pretty decently, been to his house before. he kept hots till he got tagged a few times. and i know its something you have to always be perfect with, you can't mess up even once or you will pay for it. so the rewards just wasn't really there.
