I don't like that I can't see her hands but I feel like I did a decent job in slimming her down without resorting to photoshop magickery. I also learned a bit about what I hate about doing HS girl seniors. They tend to wear makeup that doesn't match their regular skin tone and so I have different exposures for their arms/legs than their face which makes it harder on me. I'm sure their family/friends don't consciously notice but I HATE it.

try creating a new layer and surface blur it, take a snap shot and delete the layer. then use the history brush to paint back on the surface blur at 20% opacity. it may even her skin tone out.. cuz it does bug me too. :/

yah, I'm not going through all the trouble of layers/masking, etc. A friend has some property out here and she wanted some good photos so I got up at the crack of dawn to get good light.

Yea yea yea....it's not like I was shooting in broad daylight....it's an indoor pickup soccer game, you can't tell everyone to pose nicely in frame

I can't see the exif. If I were I could help ya out a little bit. But it looks like you are shooting in AV or TV and have to crop and then bump up exposure. The white BG will throw off the exposure to where you have to bump it = more noise.

In indoor it should be relatively even in lighting and so throw that bad boy in all manual for exposure and just make sure the skin is exposed correctly (even at higher ISO). Expose to the right then bring it back down in post = crisper photos without as much noise.

They just don't look like they were shot with a 300 2.8. More like a Tamron 70-300 that costs $100 @ 5.6.

I was shooting full manual; 1/800 @ f2.8 with 5,000 iso. The lighting only went around the perimeter of the dome housing the two turf fields at either goal. The lights were low and pointed up into the dome which is over 50 feet tall. Falloff was heavy so basically both ends of the field had half-decent lighting but the sides and center were fairly dim from a photographer's standpoint. Additionally I was shooting jpegs and not RAW because I didn't want to waste time emptying cards in the middle of a game that was only 45 minutes long.

Some of the shots were done with my 70-200 F4 which also contributed to not-so-great quality. All said and done, I didn't make much of a profit and the client was happy enough to offer me another gig so I'm fine with it.

While ego is important, at the end of the day this is all that really matters.

When you guys mention horizons; are you referring to the placement of the horizon or the angle of horizon. If it's the angle, what's wrong with doing a little dutch tilt?

pretty sure its the angle of the horizon... u generally want a flat horizon, which makes everything in the image just more level... when its tilted, a lot of the time you end up cocking your head, which is just annoying

before I learned:

After:

I think the last 2 are a lot better than the first... due to the horizon

It's generally referring to making the photo feel level. It's not always a necessity though. Fast action photography like sports is much more lenient on technical correctness than portraiture. You want to get the moment and some sacrifice is acceptable in achieving that.

Ah, I understand. What about when the angle is used to fill in the dead space that would result from a straight horizon?

Example: If I shot "straight" I'd have a pretty good view of the TV or door in the background.

It's merely a convention. When you deviate from it, though, it evokes a feeling. It's not inherently hip or arsty; it's usually unsettling, because it shows the world in a way we are not used to seeing it (everything is off kilter). Like every other artistic choice, when you do this there must be causality.

Given your example, I would have found a way to make it work in a vertical orientation...it wants so badly to be framed vertically.

Sorry if I sound like a pretentious art student. I'm still in analytical mode after writing an eight page paper...
