Crane: just an fyi next time ask to see LEO credentials. Ask to see a badge AND ID card. You can request two forms of LE creds so you cab positively ID they're a cop. Also they have to identify themselves if they are not in a marked uniform. As in, if they don't have a badge and a uniform with county/state patches you cannot reasonably identify then as a LEO.
Also, you can get that girl for battery. It would be a long shot but you at least avoided the hassle by informing them. Also:
Talk to the restaurant manager/owner
Complain or threaten to complain to the BBB
Just keep walking. If a "cop" detains you ask for creds in a respectful manner if you cannot reasonably identify them.
If all else fails, claim that person violated your rights. You have the right to refuse service or refuse payment pending a claim or a complaint. You cannot be expected to pay for a service since you did not willingly agree physically or verbally to such services.
If I was you I would kept walking. 8 dollars for a night in jail is well worth the civil suit against the city and the business owner.
Dude come on. If he would have kept walking he would have taking a beating/tasing and it would have been for nothing. It's your word versus the cops. Who do you think is going to win? It's his word (possibly intoxicated) versus the business worker, who do you think the cop is going to believe?
He did the absolute right thing. Pretty sure he didn't want to hang around NO for a couple weeks/months waiting for his day in court for the misdemeanors.
