As a newbie

I have a question.
Where do you recommend to start playing, and which is the best location to play in your opinion?
I would like to hear what everyone thinks.
Thanks.

Start in the woods and slowly progress to the speed ball fields with occasional speedball play. Decide which one you like more and play it.

My advice would be go play a little of both and see where you have more fun. Someone people like the stalking and tactics of woodland, where some prefer the fast pace/small field of speedball. I would go to your local field and play a little of it all, and ask any questions you have about paintball to other players. Good luck and have some fun!

Get out and play some rec-ball. I'd suggest maybe a full day of it. Next, I would definitely check in with your field and see if you can do a little game called Civil War. Basically you get teams that line up 50 yards from each other. Each player from one team shoots ONE BALL ONLY, at the other team. If someone shoots more then once, that person stands in the middle and everyone takes an extra shot at him. But then the other team shoots. After each team has shot, you take 5 steps up until your about 15 or 20 yards away from each other.

Do that until you get used to getting shot. That's the best way to start out. It doesn't hurt bad, but the pro players have ABSOLUTELY no worries about getting shot. It's basically laser tag to them now. They just want to strategize and win.

Then start watching some speedball at your local field and take some mental notes. See what kind of things work out for them and if you think you can do it, give it a shot. And just start playing a few games with them.

Anyways ... get the following skills down:

Snapshooting <--- IMPORTANT
Breaks
Running/gunning
SLIDES <--- IMPORTANT
Watch the Dynasty videos called How to play paintball. Watch all of them. rynopaintball posted them so they shouldn't be too hard to find.
Play snake side, d-side, center 50 (if your field is a good field to play it on), etc. Get used to ALL positions (back, front, middle, etc.) and see what you're best at!

Hope I could help.

as you first start out i wouldnt go right into speedball unless there are alot of new people there. chances are just about everyone is very experienced and will destroy you (no offense, its just the truth for any new player) and is normally not the best environment to join the sport in.

like others said just get used to woodsball, knowing how to commincate, field awareness, snap shooting and all those skills you prbly wont even realize your getting better at are needed for speedball

I think everyone's got the wrong idea, but that may be me, too.

ONLY (or until you have tons of experience and credibility) PLAY ON A DESIGNATED PAINTBALL FIELD.

There are scenario, woodsball, speedball, airball, hyperball (which is also speedball), junkyard, snowball, and urban fields as well as many variations of these.

To find where the ones near you might be, check this section out: http://www.pbnation.com/fields/

you get to it by the fields and stores tab at the top of the page.

It DOESN'T matter if you start with woodsball or speedball. There is no difference in where you start. What matters most is which one you like playing more. I say play both, it's simple. You won't be good at first in either. Not to bash you, just saying the truth. No matter what your going to get shot by a fast shooting Ego/DM/whatever playing speedball or you will get shot by some fast shooting Tippmann with a response trigger/E grip and a flatline/apex barrel. There are experienced players in both types of play.

Barbara_Walters has hit on the head. Play BOTH and see which one you like more. Ask questions to get better or more familiar with either. Heck you might end up liking both. I love both personally. It's a matter a preference that is all. You can play on a 3 or 5 man "speedball" team and then next weekend play a UWL (Ultimate Woodsball League) tournament.

To help you start off, you DO NOT need a specific marker for either. It is harder playing a speedball "match" with a marker that has a stock, a side feed, and features to simulate a real firearm. Commonly referred to as a "milsim" marker. It's not impossible but more difficult due to needing to play in tighter situations. I use a variety of markers for both. Everything from Autocockers to DM's, none of my markers are specific to either.

You will need to learn the basics for either types of play. Not knowing how to snap shoot well, will get you shot in either PERIOD. Here is a very simple run down of what you should learn right away.

-SAFETY The most important skill you can learn NO IF AN'S OR BUT's
-How to properly use your equipment <-Also VERY important
-Staying Hydrated <- Often overlooked (Why go play and end up in a hospital?)
-Snap shooting
-Communication
-Reloading

Some people give advice on how to get better. That's nice in all but the best advice I can give is have fun and play safe. Your not going to want to play more if you aren't having fun. No matter what I hope you have fun, stay safe, and continue to enjoy the sport.

I thought I was the only one. Glad to see I'm not crazy.

Oh and by the way when I'm referring to "woodsball" in my post. I mean a woodsball field at a local field. Where there is supervision and professional staff working.

That's about what I was going to say, so I'll cheap out and copy it.

Find a local field and go watch for a little bit? Talk to some people there, especially refs.

try everything you can. every crazy sounding game that people are playing, give it a try. pump, stock, recball, woodsball, scenario ball, speeball (3 man, 5 man, 7 man), crazy weirdo game modes, give it all a chance, find something you like.

Play a little bit of everything. Much like anything paintball related, you have to decide for yourself what you like best. Just get out as much as possible and figure out what style of play you like
