Well, it would be helpful to know what kind of 'ball you'll be playing, but I'll assume it's woodsball ('Cause it's awesome!).
For recreational play, you shouldn't need a lot of fancy gear. I play in Army ACUs and have for a long time. They work well and hold up surprisingly well to abuse. Start with some good jeans or tactical pants, then if you really feel a need, you can buy some paintball pants. I've been playing five years and never owned a pair of paintball pants!
As for pads, for speedball you might need some elbow pads. I have an Army Combat Shirt with built-in elbow pads, and I don't do enough insane dives to warrant knee-pads. For woodsball, most likely you won't be diving a lot (unless you play like I do...) so pads are an extra.
A tank. I always rep Ninja. They make good stuff, they're made in the USA, and they're durable as all get out! I've had my Ninja about two years now and I love it!
Masks:
I would recommend a V-force or a JT Raptor for some budget lenses. Don't buy anything from Brass Eagle (that's a no-brainer) as they probably won't be comfortable or safe. Play with your mask a few games and decide if you need to upgrade.

Pod-pack:
This is also a good thing to have. It allows you to carry extra paint on the field and lets you reload quickly and efficiently. I recommend an NXE pack if you can find one, with a capacity of at least five pods. This allows you to be flexible in the amount of paint you carry, and decisions are fairly easy depending on the field you'll be playing on, and the approximate game length.

What kind of marker do you have? You didn't mention a hopper or marker in the question, so I'm assuming you already have one?
Good luck and good hunting!

The bare minimum is a tank, gun, hopper, and mask. The rest is what you make of it.

What's your price range, how often do you play, are you looking for woodsball/speedball or a hybrid setup, also I would worry about equipment in this order

Mask
Marker
Hopper
Tank
Pants
pads
jersey

Please note that if you go with any sort of electronic marker, do NOT use co2. the co2 in those bottles is a liquid and if any of that ends up in the electronics of your marker, it will more than likely short it out.

you should not need that big of a harness. A smaller one will allow you to run faster. Ninja is good, but a good used grills, I4, Profiler, or Events will be much nicer than a new pro vantage. Understand when buying used, you should expect to replace the lens. When I bought my events, I bought a new lens, and found the one on my events to still be in good condition, so now I have a backup lens.

I really like the vantage mask I've got, almost as much than the really high end masks, like grills, events, profits, i4s etc. However, YOU might not, so make sure you at least try it on first.

I like my Jackco pack, but they're not made anymore...I'm tall and lean, so it fits me pretty well, and it'll fit all my fat friends! (Not really, they're not all fat...)
NXE makes good packs, and for your flexible playing style (woodsball and speedball) a capacity of six pods ought to be more than enough...unless you shoot a ton, then nothing will ever be enough!
I'm fine with five pods, I hardly ever use more than two, so it all comes down to personal preferance!

if you want a pack that is gonna be small fitting and work well for any style of play. you really can't go wrong with the empire hinge se it is a little pricy but works amazing. i have the older style fastpack and it does an amazing job
link>>>http://www.ansgear.com/Empire_Hinge_...gese-7-red.htm
the jersey is never really needed unless you are playing for a team and want to all look alike. the pants are the second best gear you should buy behind the mask..
dont go cheap on the mask. buy the best one you can afford. make sure it has a thermal lens. i love my profit and my flex the i4 i have i nice but i still prefer the profit
tank get what you can afford simple as that. if you have to buy used you can get one out of hydro for really cheap and get it hydro tested for pretty reasonable.
pads it depends on what you are gonna be playing.. as a back player i don't usually wear anything more then my empire sliders under the pants and my eclipse elbow pads from a few years ago.. if you are gonna be playing front you will want knee and elbow pads.. a bounce vest isn't really needed either unless you really want one
sorry if this is hard to read i just typed what i was thinking so the order is all jacked up

i suggest in this order:
high quality mask (jt proflex, dye i3/4, empire E-vents, v force grillz, sly profits) sorry if i missed any, feel free to add on if i did

tank: get a used 4500psi tank off here for like 80-100. make sure its less then 5 years so you dont need a hydro

hopper: you dont need a brand new rotor or z2, but if you can find one cheap go ahead; i suggest vlocity jr, halo, pinokio, and maybe vmax

gun:cheaper i suggest something from azodin (200 or less)
200-350 i suggest a GoG extcy or an empire/invert mini (the guns the same)
and past that i would suggest against as a starter, but if you insist then axe, etek, then the company proto. would suggest completely against anything passed that until you get used to the sport

gear: for pants i suggest dye, empire, eclipse, jt. if you live in a hotter area then valken are good too; but have the least amount of padding

for jersey i suggest eclipse or dye

for pads if you think you need, then whichever ones fit you best. i suggest dye, eclipse, empire, valken, think invert has some.

buy your gear from a year or 2 back, but still new. its give or take the same product at a much cheaper price.

dont feel the need to buy all this gear at once, but welcome to the sport!
