Are you gonna track it? If not, I think you'll find that a 328i + a few mods will more than satisfy your cravings. I'm still surprised on a daily basis by just how easily the n52 zips my 330i around.

A 335i with a couple mods is going to be on a whole different level from a 330i with a couple mods.

Well duh, but this is a discussion about compromises. He wants a fast car with an engine that isn't likely to cost a lost in repairs as the miles add up. He's already mentioned a f30 328i, why not look at an E92 328i instead. The n52 has proven to be reliable and it's still rather powerful for what it is.

Because I need the AWD, and the 535's were notorious for fuel pump issues. A comfy DD, and better on gas.

Anyone in here done a valve cover gasket change on an N52? I changed my spark plugs this weekend and upon removing the #6 plug I found oil around it. Trying to figure out if it's worth it to invest in the necessary tools or if I should just pay someone.

If you're relatively competent I'd DIY, there is just a lot to do just to get enough room so it will probably take the better part of a day

Metal or plastic valve cover?

Either one is easy enough, but metal is much easier.

If it's a magnesium (metal) valve cover, make sure you replace the bolts and use a torque wrench, because the bolts are aluminum and you chance snapping them off in the head if you aren't used to tightening them.

Either valve cover will have a plastic hose running from the back of the valve cover down under the intake manifold. This is the most common place I see DIY'ers struggle, because they can become very brittle from heat, and can look quite intimidating to replace if you are to break it. It's not the end of the world if you do.

You will need inverted torx sockets for the job, so make sure you have them. You will need a 1/4 inch E8 to easily remove the lower valvetronic motor bolt. You also need to make sure you correctly remove the valvetronic motor by backing off the motor from the eccentric shaft. There is a small opening for a tiny allen in the back of the valvetronic motor. You can get away with not backing it off, but you risk breaking the eccentric shaft if it's under a lot of spring pressure and you just yank the motor out, because the eccentric shaft will snap back and can break when it impacts the stop, at which point you are either replacing the cylinder head or the eccentric shaft.

Since you are already in there and they leak fairly commonly, you should replace the valvetronic motor seal and eccentric shaft sensor seal while in there. Both are simple to change. The valvetronic motor seal is two bolts, and the eccentric shaft sensor seal just presses into the top of the valve cover.
