Nah, the SMG is almost identical to a manual gear box, except it has a computer controlled actuator and pump that does the shifting for you. Once that pump or actuator goes, you got no more shifting. It doesn't just revert back to an automatic, totally different system.

335s have their own problems. You're still going to be in a car with no warranty, weather its an E46 M or $21k 335i. The 335 should still have the extended coverage on the HPFP though. But the M3 is still going to be the better drivers car. And its better looking.

Disagree. but thats not a debateable point since its preference, You are right about the 335i having its own quirks such as carbon build up and hpfp issues, but most of the hpfp issues have been resoloved at this point.

the one thing you left out is the fact that the 335 is faster, stock v stock and modded v modded(within reason)

Yeah, but a lot of people would rather have an older M rather than a newer non-M. It's all about the badge, not about performance for some people.

did they actually update the pump? Last I heard they just extended the warranty for 7 years but didn't redesign the pump.

on the internet people are saying its the same part, tech from dealer says its an updated part. I see very few people having to replace it more than once, but usually they have to get the injectors replaced and then go back for the pump so they think that its the same issue. My pump was replaced already so idk.

I own a 335i, just got it, put a Cobb Stage 1 sport tune on 91 octane. Put down 345whp/400ftlb at Cobb in Austin, that's without a new FMIC, downpipes, intake etc.

HPFP at least has an updated part number whether or not it is actually new is another question. But it's warrantied for 10 years, 120k miles.

Also carbon buildup is a negligible problem. They were showing it amounted to a 5-10whp loss at 100k miles worth of build up. It just isn't pretty but not worrisome.

I love my 335i and would pick it over an e46 m3 any day.

Carbon build up isn't really carbon build up on n54s, it's sludge build up on intake valves, and it is a huge deal. Forget the horsepower loss, a huge number of n54s don't make it to 100k period without misfire issues from it. Most owners of cars with n54s haven't made it to the 100k mark just yet, so it's tough to tell, but every tech in our shop has done their fair share of intake valve cleaning on n54s with way less then 100k miles. It's a conversation we have had at our dealership between techs a few times, and all of us agree it's going to be a very huge deal when all the n54 cars start seeing 75k+ miles. Who was showing that it amounted to only a slight horsepower loss? If it was the companies selling the tunes, there's good reason. Because those tunes are going to make the problem so much worse, they know it, and they are attempting to ease the concerns of anyone who is smart enough to see it. That sludge build up is a direct result of direct injection and turbo oil consumption, which the n54 is known for. More boost is going to really cause big time issues for anyone who is running a high mileage n54 hard.

Master tech from Santa Barbara, CA. He's the one who's shown it hasn't caused issues, and it's like everything else that's 'gone wrong' on this car. BMW stands by their product, updates it, and re-warranties. So if they feel this carbon buildup starts causing problems, I'm sure they'll fix it or throw in a cleaning. Just like the whole waste gate rattle issue got sorted out I'd still rather a car that comes with forged internals and where I can put under $2k in upgrades and be running an 11 sec 1/4 flat every day without having to strip it and it being a great Daily driver. I can't say the same about an e46 m3 which has its own inherent list of problems.

TLDR: All cars have problems and the N54 in the 335i is still a great choice for the price.

I agree, It does cause issues ASIDE from a small lack of power. cleaning it really isnt that bad, What i really want to know is that, will a oil catch can actually reduce the build up like advertised. I have seen proof that meth injection keeps the intake clean but dont feel like running meth.

is there an echo in here, lol. I am running Cobb stg1 agressive. 345 sounds pretty high, Mach V has a dynojet dyno and the stg 1 agr. cars are throwing 320-330 down. mine will probibly be on the highend since its a 6mt
