soooooo this project has been on a 1+ year hiatus, but it's coming back.
currently sourcing parts and such for a few prototypes.

also, it will look a little less homemade.

stay tuned.

I've been looking for a nice project to get back into paintball with. Hit me up for help/advice if you want, I'll do what I can.

Out of curiosity (and don't feel the need to answer if you don't want to, I'm always wanting to know more about these things):

- IR or basic LED/phototransistor?
- I'm guessing first beam starts timer, second beam stops timer (and calculations based on distance between beams from there)?
- If going with the LED route, have you considered going with one emitter and two phototransistors in a 'V' shape, since most LED's have a wider viewing angle? It wouldn't change much, just possible eliminate one piece of equipment.
- If going open source, seriously let me know how I can help

Looks great by the way, I love homebrewed stuff.

I think the one in the video is using attiny84. redoing all of the code though, it wasn't very elegant and wasted a lot of battery.

Pretty sure it was IR. basic stuff would be affected much more by ambient light.
correct on the calculations.
I had not thought about doing 1 LED, 2 phototransistors. Interesting idea. Could probably be done with a prism too. For now, I'm sticking with 2.

As for open source, I guess I could but I don't think anyone who has the ability to program, modify, and use the open source code needs the open source code, since this thing is so simple.

Also, I dont really know where I'd post it etc.

Hey look, old thread that's relevant to my interests so I won't feel quite so bad necroposting.

If you haven't come up with a housing yet (I got bored with reading), lexan is your friend. I'm building mine around a section of fluorescent light guard tube stuff. It's clear, cheap, and, most likely, something related to lexan, and it's in the right shape right off the shelf, which works for my laziness (that and it's a pain to form a clear tube with minimal distortion). I'm hoping it's clear enough to let me mount the emitter/detector pairs in aluminum rings that will maintain alignment without having to drill holes in the tube. Then the rings can just slide on, stick down with hot glue until it's calibrated, and lock them down forever with epoxy. I'll turn the rings with a size of PVC in mind, then just slide the assembly into the pipe and secure it with a couple of button head screws. If I get real ambitious I can add o-rings and make it waterproof.

The display is the hard part. I'm going with either 3 7 segments or an LCD since either will be a serial arrangement that only takes 2 pins on an '84... actually, I can probably fit it on an '85, but I think I have more '84s. Same code either way, though. Anyway, the 7 segments would be hooked up through a serial to 7 segment IC I have somewhere, but if you have 10 pins to spare you can do it just with the uC. Just multiplex the whole thing as a big, annoying array and define each character. Not hard, just a lot of typing and soldering. The LCD is more expensive, but a plug in and done solution. Now what would be cool is nixie tubes. Retarded expensive, but I'm willing to bet it's never been done before.

I've been procrastinating on this project for many years. The original plan was to build it into the gun, along with the board that handles solenoids (this was long before the Shocker) and figure out how to let the gun control it's own velocity, but that project never went anywhere since uCs weren't as easily learned as they are now. I'll finish it someday, maybe. First I want to get this BKO spool conversion finished and working right.

Oh, the right place for open source projects is, apparently, github.
