I submit to you my homemade chrono

black portion of video is when I hand-feed each reball
sound is delayed bc of my poor quality recording

pretty simple if you're at all familiar with microcontrollers
for those interested, I used an attiny84 (i started with arduinos, so i'm avr biased)

it's the phototransistor sensor type.
or "laser eyes" ...

I decided to go with the most basic chrono possible bc i'm lazy. all it measures is fps, I figure that's enough to tune a gun at home. if memory serves me right, parts list is sub $10 (primarily because i decided to go with a single 7segment LED, so I had enough pins on my uC, no need for another IC to control display). To get a 3 digit, I'd have to add one more IC, but the real annoying part is that I'd have to solder about 20 more wires. By hand, that's a little too much. To add an LCD module would be unnecessarily bulky and add a good deal of programming that i'm too lazy to do.

9/6/2013 EDIT:
It's been more than a year since i put this project on the backburner.
I'm starting up again, gonna build some prototypes!

I just got a Xradar chrono. It is consistently 3-4fps higher than the Xradar, which means it's just a clocking issue that I can tune.

would love to see a more finished "beta" model or even one that can take the abuse of a "normal paintball player", if there even is one.

I'm no business man, but if you can make these for $10, throw another $20 on there for labor and a good shell/case for it and for $30 any paintballer could have a good chrono.

He's probably looking for a parts list and a schematic.

working on a better beta, not sure about "abuse of a normal pb player" though. making an enclosure that is solid enough is not that easy. especially with the type of sensing i'm using.

that was in the back of my mind with i shot for lowest possible price. however, it takes a good amount of time to make right now. not even sure its worth the time for me to make to sell.

it's simple enough that anyone who can program a microcontroller should figure out how to make one without looking at my schematic just by knowing it's a phototransistor sensor.

That's just it. I would bet most people on this forum don't even know what a microcontroller is, to say nothing of how to program it. Anyone who can't tell how to build this thing (more or less) just by the description probably needs square-one instruction.

I wouldn't expect you to give that instruction though. Its not your job to teach EE to PBN.

yea that's why i didn't include such details. not sure this is the place for microcontroller talk.

but if anyone is interested in learning about microcontrollers, arduino is a pretty awesome little introduction to uCs with lots of online support. that's what got me into uCs. i wouldn't mind helping people get started on that, though my knowledge is quite limited.

two. spaced a known distance.
one would be a little tricky and probably inaccurate.
