2012 NCPA Championships Recap - Friday

This morning the 2012 NCPA College Finals took off, and with a bang! The NCPA always runs fantastic tournaments, providing a clear webcast with good commentary and a reporter as well as an overall good tournament experience with nice fields and good refs. Here is a breakdown of Friday’s scores and each teams rankings in the X-Ball division.

1. University of Nebraska – Omaha (3-0)

Nebraska came into Friday’s competition hot – bringing back current UNO students that now play on Vicious such as Bryan Bortol, Phil Khank, Zak Sherman, and Patrick Wingfield. The team won all 3 of their matches by rather much – wining 8-1, 9-1, and 10-1, with an average point margin of +8. Look for them to continue to play well.

2. Cal State University – Long Beach (3-0)

Cal State, as well as Nebraska, also finished the day 3-0. They won their matches 9-1, 6-5, and 7-3. Although they were 3-0, certain games did end up being rather close, like their 6-5 match. Overall they finished the day as the #2 seed, with a +4.33 point margin.

3. University of Tennessee Volunteers (3-0)

The Volunteers are always a favored team in the NCPA tournaments. With much experience and numerous tournament wins they performed as usual this year, going 3-0 today. They won their matches 6-4, 4-2, and ended the day strong, winning 10-2. In total their average point margin was +4, placing them as the number 3 seed.

4. University of Florida Gators (3-0)

As well as the Volunteers, the Gators have been known to perform well in NCPA tournaments, and this year was no exception. The team started the day strong, winning their first two matches 7-4. They ended by winning 4-2 and then beating Temple 7-4 to wrap up the days competition.

5. Liberty University Flames (2-0)

Liberty was the last team to finish the day undefeated. They have always been a rather strong club and the team definitely worked hard to prepare for today’s matches. 5-3 and 8-3 were the scores of their matches.

6. University of Connecticut Huskies (2-1)

The Huskies are usually a team that does rather well in the NCPA tournaments, and although they did lose their last game, the team didn’t play that bad. Their first match was close, winning only 6-5, but they came out strong in their next, winning it 10-5. For the last match of the day the team was defeated 5-6, resulting in a final win margin of 1.66.

7. Purdue University Boilermakers (2-1)

Purdue University began the day winning in a close match 6-5. The rest of their games for the day were no easy victories, however they were able to come out on top in one, winning and 7-5. But they lost the other, 5-6. Due to these close games they ended Friday with a point margin just above positive, at +0.66.

8. Ohio University Bobcats (2-1)

Ohio has always been a team that comes into these tournaments extremely prepared, and practice for a great deal of time in order to do well. They started the day rather rough, getting defeated 1-9. But then they bounced back, winning their final matches 4-3 and 7-3; they ended up with a final point margin of -1.

9. Florida Atlantic University Owls (1-2)

Florida Atlantic University had a rough morning, losing their first two matches 3-5 and 3-7. They weren’t extreme blowouts though, and the team took this motivation to do better, and finished strong, winning their final match 5-4. Sadly, the first two loses of the day placed them at a negative point margin of -1.67.

10. Kennesaw State University Owls (1-2)

This morning Kennesaw University came out strong, winning their first match 6-4. But sadly the team couldn’t continue this success, being defeated in their final matches of the day 1-9 and 4-5. This put the Owls at a point margin of -2.34; however, look for the team to try to regain their success in tomorrow’s competition.

Teams that went win-less:

11. Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (0-3)

12. West Point Black Knights (0-3)

13. Temple University Owls (0-3)

14. Northeastern University Huskies (0-3)

15. University of Maryland Terrapins (0-3)

Sadly these five teams were unable to find success Friday. Hopefully they will go back to the hotel, notice their mistakes, fix them, and come back strong.

Whoops. Fixed. I was copying the scores from the NCPA which shows them losing the first match.

Not "former." They are all current students. NCPA doesn't allow former students to play.
