Whats your motivation for playing such an Expensive Sport???

I'm doing a research paper on the motivation/reason behind people playing the sport of paintball even though it is such an expensive hobby. I've been playing for the past 7 years myself and I know how costly it can get. Please no posts saying "Cause its fun!" We all know this fact already. Lemme know your motivation for the sport...

I love the adrenaline rush I can get from playing paintball. I love the satisfaction when I pick off a semi with my pump. I love the thrill that follows the seconds right after the whistle blows. I love the cheers from the sidelines whenever something substantial happens. Just a few of the many reasons off the top of my head.

Back in 1996 My best friend Kyle got me into Paintball. We were both in the seventh grade and used Old school Brass Eagle Stingrays and Spyders to play every weekend in the woods at his house. We made a pretty decent field and invited others to play on it for years.

Once High School was over with Kyle moved away. We continued to talk and hang out whenever he came back as best friends do. In 2007 when Kyle was down in Georgia trying to get his commercial flying license he called me and told me that he would be up to Michigan in a week and he wanted to play some Paintball. We talked about Paintball for 2 hours on the phone that day....4 days later I get a phone call that kyle was missing after going on a routine flight. His parents went down there and everybody involved with law enforcement in Georgia was looking for him. They found the plane wreckage 2 days later. He was my best friend.

Now I play competitively in local tournaments wearing his football number on my back in his memory. That's my motivation for playing Paintball.

It's still cheaper than racing.

As an aside, steve_81, that's one of my other lines of work. I do search and rescue, specifically trained in aircraft SAR. Sorry to hear about your friend.

My typical day of playing costs me around $16... Now that I am older, I needed something to get me out of the house in the winter. Seeing that men have a hard time getting together to do "manly" things, I decided we needed to play paintball. So I got a bunch of my friends into it, and started my field.

The memories are amazing, and hanging out with your friends in the woods around a campfire between games, is just really fun. Many of us bring our kids and it is a great learning experience for life skills, character, and honor. You can cheat, but it isn't worth it, as your integrity should be more valuable than staying in a game after getting hit. Plus it is great exercise, and keeps me in shape, as I know "paintball is coming" so I will do things to get ready. (like go out and run the hills).

Now I film my games as it is fun to capture a good kill on video...

This weekend I am planning on going to my first "real" paintball event. I've been playing for 6 years, and I've never paid to play at a "real" field before... I just play outlaw at my field, or at another local outlaw field run by a church (paintball junkeez).

The reason I am going, because I don't have to manage anything! I can just go and have fun without worrying about all the responsibility that comes with running my own events!

Basically I like the feeling when I play it, a good day of paintball makes me forget about everything else going on in my life and the world so I'm in just a really great state of mind when I play. Basically paintball is my drug of choice.

I like shooting people with gelatin filled capsules at a speed of roughly 200 mph. I only started getting good at paintball because I don't like getting shot with said gelatin filled capsules going roughly 200 mph.

Good days with the boys, adrenaline rush, the fun and aggressiveness. Paintball is a very unique sport that feels great to be a part of, most people will never get to try it, and they are missing out.

Quite simply, because I was never any good at other "team" sports. I never had any interest in watching or playing basketball, football, or baseball, but did anyway just because that's what kids are "supposed" to do.

I was always the kid that had to go the biggest on bike jumps, go the fastest, launch the biggest cliffs on my skis, etc. So more of an adrenaline junkie type. Still am, and I'm 34 years old. Paintball was always that type of sport for me, but in a "team" format. And after all these years of playing, without question, I am better at paintball than anything else. Being able to wield that skill and enjoy it while making friends is what keeps me coming back...the feeling of walking onto the field, be it woodsball or speedball, with a hopper full of paint and a few pods after a long winter is indescribeable.

Im in the same boat man.

My yearly sports routine, at least while i was in school and not paying always paying my way, was winter im out snowboarding, spring and fall were paintball and surfing in the summer when the family went to the beach.

After high school, it became cars and paintball.....not exactly cheap but the rush is just awesome.

As for why I play, despite all cost, the paintball field is my nirvana. Nothing else matters for those 8-10hrs. Hell i've nearly totaled my car and it never bothered me at the field, I just am at total peace with everything there. Its just perfect.

You can just forget your life for a moment, spend time with your boys, this new family that you have become a part of. Playing not just for yourself but them too, and when your standing there screaming, one among ten, you remember why you play this sport, you get to live as loud as you want for just a brief period of time.

it's completely unique and really doesn't cost much once you get into it.

i find gas prices make it expensive for me since all the quality tourny fields are atleast an hour away.

starting out costs the most since you dont have anything, once you get everything you just have to pay entry and for paint which now you can get some pretty good deals at some places so its not as bad

I play to escape everyday life and of course the adrenaline rush. I get picked on from time to time, but at paintball I'm one of the best guys (for who I play with) an everyone wants me on there team. Paintball makes me feel accepted you could say.

The feeling you get when you watch your paint break on someone.

It's a good competition and it's something to do. It's exciting and a good reason to be active and stay in shape.
