*Official* Building/Upgrading Advice Thread

I have noticed a lot of people lately with question about building/upgrading a computer. (Including me) I just though it would be a good idea to make an organized thread so the board wont be cluttered.

For building just post your price range, and what you want to to with the computer

For upgrading just post your current system specs, your price range, and what you wan tot upgrade.

I hope this helps everybody out,
Nick

32-bit OSs can address 4gb total memory. Your RAM is the last to be allocated, so if you have a 512mb graphics card and another 256mb worth of various controllers (yes, your computer needs memory for that), you'll end up with about 3.2gb RAM max, no matter how much RAM is physically installed on the mobo. If you have more VRAM, you'll get less usable RAM.

I have a rather outdated computer that up until now, only ran video from the motherboard. I tried installing an evga 7600gt that I won on ebay just to run basic youtube videos and stream movies. The monitor I'm using has 1 AVG port and 1 DVI port, and I was doing AVG-AVG for the onboard video. Now when I plug dvi-dvi with the new card, I receive no picture whatsoever. The fan does spin on the card, though. I'd like to give this comp to my parents once I got it running, but have been outta the loop for a while due to college and such. Thanks a ton guys.

/sorry for the lengthy post

edit: When attempting to boot, I have the avg cord plugged into the monitor, but not the motherboard, while the dvi one is connected to the card. I'm assuming I should have only one in at a time?

First, it's VGA, not AVG.

Second, did you re-seat the graphics card? Is there a button on the monitor to change source?

your monitor is still probably on the vga source. switch it to dvi and see if that helps.

You may need to disable your on board video in the bios before you will be able to use the new card.

It's just an edit of the handling.dat file. You edit the handling characteristics of the cars, whichever you want to edit, even the motorcycles. For instance, I made the faggio scooter 40 tons and top speed at something like 300mph, but it's also much harder to control than a car in the game. There are settings for transmission, suspension, brakes, etc, but I really only understand a few of them, google GTA iv handling mod if you want to know what they all mean.

I can e-mail you an exact copy of the file if you want, here's a link to it.

Here is about where the file would be.

I ended up deciding not to buy a new headset since I have decent headphones already. I just wanted an extra pair for our electric drum set... so I don't have keep switching back and forth. I was itching to fill another pci-e slot, so I ended up ordering "Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D THX PCIE Fatal1ty Pro Sound Card SB1356" from Amazon instead.

Seems about average, I believe. But I lol'd at this in one of the reviews:

I'd like a big Crucial M4 SSD to go along M4 128 and WD caviar black 2TB.

SSD's are still a bit pricey... but I could use another M4 128 in the near future.

Jagov Fapsky ninja deleted... but I can still see it.

I saw it before he deleted it.

I don't think it's a good idea to completely replace your HDD space with SSD unless you have an incredibly minimal amount of **** to store.

My 256GB 830s were $350 each. A 512GB M4 for $530 is a pretty decent price.

music - <10gb
games - 30-100gb
pictors/videos -<10gb
school - <10gb

i could easily get away with a single 256 ssd
and i have an external 1tb external hd for archiving old stuff
the only hardware problems i have ever encountered in my years of computer use have been with mechanical hard drives.
