I checked the NCPA rule book, and it says coaching must be done by a rostered team member for Class A. I don't know if this means a player, or a rostered coach.

For Class AA, we have someone who would like to be designated staff/coach that isn't a student at our university. Is this allowed, and are there other rules for Class AA coaching that deviate from the other Class A rules? If this is allowed, we also were wondering if we needed to do anything special when registering this person on our roster as staff.

I was also curious because we were assessed a minor penalty today for having one of our extra rostered players coach. Then again, "spectator coaching" was what was supposed to be allowed today.

For Class A, it can be either.

For Class AA, anyone on the roster must be in your team's pit, or doing something related to being in the pit (getting paint, using restrooms, purchasing gear, etc). They cannot be on the spectator side of the field participating in the game. If you want a person specifically designated to 'coach' from the non-pit side of the field, they need to not be on your roster anywhere. If you want them in the pit, they must be on your roster. One person cannot do both things.

From what you described, this penalty was assessed correctly. A spectator is defined as anyone not on your teams roster.

Would an individual on the roster as a coach (not staff or player) be allowed to "coach" from the spectator side, or would such an individual be required to stay in the pit as well?

There is no coach position on the roster, so they would be required to stay in the pits. The two positions on a roster are player and staff.

Do members of our staff in our pits have to be students at our university?

Snake side should be spectator side for all fields NOT the TV field. It's entirely possible (as it has been in previous years) that the TV/Webcast field will have the snake side as the pit side because of the logistics of the webcast. For Class AA, no yelling onto the field from the pits.

No, but they do need to be on the roster. And make sure they don't play.

Hey Joe,
When will this be for sure? Last year we practiced with snake-side spectators and then Nationals was D-side only for AA.
Thanks
Todd

Also, at Nationals they allowed rostered players to do spectator coaching so doesn't follow the other thing you were told in this thread
