Barrel cutout size to make room for freak insert

Anyone ever attempt to do this themselves? I have a lathe at my house and my buddy and I would like to experiment on some older barrels until we get it right to attempt on some good ones.

Im sure it varies per barrel as they come in different bores from factory but is it as simple as taking the outside measurement of the insert and the inside measurement of the barrel, simple subtraction, and start taking off material?

Thanks in advance

Not really as simple as just removing the difference between the barrels internal diameter and the insert

It must be perfectly centred or the insert will be wonky and will break balls, the precise depth needs to be bored - noting that there is a tiny difference in the ends of an insert (see video in the link below), the barrel ought to have o rings inside to steady the insert but some people have bored slightly less so that the insert is held tight between barrel and breach
The barrel you use must have enough depth all along the length of a freak insert to maintain its integrity so it does not distorted or break whilst boring

Search forums and the internet for boring barrels for freak and you will find a few examples

The one below shows the video I mention

If you want that to work you have to be dead on center. Just a 3 jaw chuck may not even be close enough if it's an old chuck or a cheap one. spend some time with your instrumentation and practice getting it perfectly centered
