NPL game play info...

A player with the flag in their possession scores when the flag is on, above, or over the goal line.

A player positioned on the line of the start box is eliminated.

Defense may move anywhere within, but not beyond the red zone.

No coach, player or staff is permitted outside of the player sideline area except to enter or exit the field of play.

Each team is authorized One (1) full 2 minute time out per half and one (1) thirty second time out per period.

Time outs may not be used in conjunction with another time out.

Time outs may not be called during live game play.

Timeouts called in the final moment prior to game start are at the Ultimate refs discretion to initiate as communicating the time out may interfere with the normal flow of the game.

Players are NEVER neutral.

Should a ten second accept or decline window pass without a signal from the offended captain, the penalty will automatically be declined.

Players who are inside the aura of play surrounding a bunker will not earn an overshooting call as they are to be considered “in-play” until they exit the bunkers aura. Players will also not earn an overshooting call if they are traveling through a shooting lane while exiting the field and/or are not rapidly exiting the field of play.

Games may not end on a defensive penalty, except when the offense is leading in points after the last play of the game, in which case the Ultimate Ref will automatically decline the penalty and the game is over.

Eliminated players will immediately indicate their status by raising either their marker or open hand above their head, and while exiting the field by the most direct route.

Coaches may move anywhere within their sideline, but never beyond the 45’ line in either direction from the 90’ line, nor onto the playing field while the game clock is running.

The flag carrier, upon the start of the game has 45 seconds to cross the first 45’ line and a cumulative 90 seconds to cross the 90’ line, after which they have 45 seconds to cross the goal line, else it results in a side out and possession changes sides. If the flag carrier is eliminated, the offense has 20 seconds to recover the flag and continue to cross the appropriate mark within said time limit, else a side out occurs and possession changes sides.

If the flag carrier is eliminated within the red zone or on the defensive side of the field, defense can recover flag and a side out is assessed.

Another confirmation of change to NPL rules. It is NOT make it take it. When an Offense scores a point, they become defense.

The NPL started out being make it take, but after evaluation, they changed the rule to make things fair for teams who might behind the learning curve, helps stop run away points from a dominate team.

This sunday

I have 3 people coming from out of town to play this weekend...would like to show them the NPL, so if we can get some current [players out on sunday to run a few points, that would be good as we still need a few more players to round out teams.

Here is a major announcement regarding the NPL. All players and coaches should read. First, we congratulate everyone involved. As of immediately, we are officially a Region on our own for the NPL. "Play Locally, Win Nationally". Let's get that title. To achieve this, it has been a frustrating process on both sides. I recognize that players have been waiting for firm announcements and likewise, we were unable to complete the schedule and teams until we knew the number of committed, paid players we had. Last night the coaches and myself met and we made the decisions necessary to carry forward. I just got off the phone with the commissioner and our changes have been approved. We are proceeding as follows and this information is now public and should be shared with all team mates as soon as possible.

Effective immediately, Team Fusion and Team Eagles have been combined to the remaining four teams. We will be entering the NPL with a 4 team region, looking to expand to 6 teams for 2013. Please see below for the new line ups.

Team Storm Coach Matt Schwartz and Assistant Coach Jeremy Clark:
Players:
Griffan Spanner, Jon MacKenzie, Trace Schuening, Jack Kelly, Cory Marx, Nick Kilgore and Mark Peters.

Team Badgers Coach Kevin Wagner and Assistant Coach Peter Stewart (from Eagles):
Players: Harley Grinder, Todd Mork, Eddie Osborn, Jason Walters, Angel Velasquez, Donald Schertz.

Team Whites: Coach Brian Albin and Assistant Coach Steve Albin (from Fusion):
Players: Mike Thompsen, David Hanan, Dustin Knettel, Mark Rogers, Jason Thompsen, Kristen Jackson

Team Reds: Coach James Cavannagh and Assistant Coach (Bear Clan Members TBA):
Players: Lane Baird, Ryan Lake, Jay Weaver, Mike Dingeldein, Jayson Williams, Marshall DeCoria

The schedule will be a 10 game day schedule with game day 1 being the official pre-season on April 14th, 2012. The start time will be 10:00 AM Storm Versus Badgers. The second game will be 12:00 Noon, Whites VS Reds.

April 28, 2012 will be game day 2 and the official start of the season.

10:00 AM will be Storm Home Team Versus Whites Away.
12:00 PM will be Badgers Home Team Versus Reds Away.

We will be submitting the rest of the games very soon, subject to some minor changes if necessary. Let's Play NPL!!!

What you missed at Red Dot Paintball in Washington:

Game 6 of Washington’s 9 game series, a Region of the NPL, was a fight to the finish as the (2-3) Badger’s prepared for the (4-1) Storm team that has been blowing through the competition in the first 5 games seeing little opposition except for game 2 when the then (0-1) Reds, who had just lost their season opener, quieted the Storm with a score of 5-1.

The game opening Capture the Flag (CTF) Shootout was performed by Arthur R representing the Badgers and G. Spanner of Storm. Spanner #9 eliminated the Badgers # 23 A. Revis, earning the flag, and chose not to defer the offense. G. Spanner of Storm immediately joined his teammates, C. Marx #13, J. McKinzie #11, and T. Schuening #10 in the start box for their first offensive play of the game. The choice to keep the flag combined with this particular player line-up set Storm up for a game opening play that would show the Badgers that they were not afraid of their fight or bite.

The first quarter was fast paced with no play lasting longer 77-seconds and both teams having 3 flag possession scoring attempts each but each only finding their way into their opponents End-Zone once; one of which was Storms opening play. #9 - Griffin Spanner scored for Storm while the Badgers own Harley Grinder #24 put a point on the board for his team. The Badgers committed two offensive errors; one by Angel Velasquez #17 and one by Arthur Revis #23 each for failing to advance the flag before time ran out on the play clock. The first period also saw the unfortunate demise of Trace Schuening #10 of Storm as a minor injury ended his day. Unofficially, the field reports that the player is physically fine and is expected to return for the next game.

After the 5-minute intermission between periods, our two teams did not come off the gas as they duplicated the first quarter posting up 6 plays (3 offense and 3 defense) but only one team was able to score. Griffin Spanner #9 of Storm shook off a solid Badger defensive cross that forced Griffin into an error for failing to advance before the play clock ran dry. Griffin fought his way into the End-Zone on the 5th play of the quarter while the Storm defense remained Fort Lock-down preventing the Badgers from burrowing their way into the scoring position. Badgers logged in two errors in the second quarter for failing to advance the flag before time ran out.

The 15-minute half-time break seemed to be almost too long as both teams came out more energized than in the first half, serving up 8 plays – that’s an average of just :45-seconds per play - Wow that’s fast! A total of 4 points were earned and the Badgers earned their namesake for biting down hard and not letting go of Storm limiting them to just 1 point and 3 errors for failing to advance the flag while demonstrating improved clock awareness with just one error for time running out. Badgers team members Revis #23 scored twice and Marks #30 scored once. The score for Storm was by their substitute player Baird who also committed a time error on the 8th play of the quarter.

Our last 5-minute intermission of the game seemed to cool off and the play count returned to levels consistent with the first and second quarters. With the Badgers committing two more time errors in the fourth quarter that left room for Storm to cyclone their way back into the End-Zone and post up the game tying score. On their last offensive play of the game, the Badgers own Arthur Revis # 23, who carried the flag on each of their possessions this quarter, was eliminated, giving Storm one more chance to close this game out without an overtime shootout, but the Badgers had other plans as they eliminated Baird and propelled the game into overtime.

The overtime Shootout is a best of 3, one versus one, CTF Shootouts where the object is to eliminate the opposing player and then Capture the Flag or Capture the Flag without being eliminated and not marking the opposing player; the latter is always a crowd pleaser as the degree of difficulty is extremely high.

The first pairing was Badgers Todd Marks versus Cory Marx with Todd earning the win and in the second round the Badgers Arthur Revis beat out the always dangerous Griffin Spanner.

Ultimately, the Badgers scored in both the first and second Shootouts, removing the need for the third and last match-up.

Final Score: Badgers 6, Storm 4

Credit goes to Storm players: Marx, McKinzie, and Spanner for never coming off the field and playing all 13 Offensive and 13 Defensive plays. Did I write that right, 26 plays in 24-minutes of game time – WOW! That’s an average of just 55-seconds per play. This game put the Speed back into Speedball.

Angel Velasquez #17, of the Badgers is one hard core defensive player with an 82% stop rate preventing scores 9 of the 11 defensive plays he fielded.

After looking through the game card, it’s quite obvious to this writer that if either team spends over 70-seconds on offense that they are more likely to break-down the defense and score.

Regional Standings are:
Rank Team Wins Loss #Games % Wins
3 Badgers 3 3 6 50.00%
1 Reds 4 2 6 66.67%
1 Storm 4 2 6 66.67%
4 Whites 1 5 6 16.67%
