There's better means to shape behavior and spanking/hitting just sets an example to the kid essentially teaching him/her that an authority figure can get there way by using force. The kid learns that they can get things from others by initiating force, threats, aggression. It's the making of a bully.

I always had a choice as a child in school and at home. My school gives me a choice of pops or ISS I received pops only once without a choice that was in elementary only because I called another student a *****. My punishments at home for cussing was some soap in the mouth or hot sauce (I always chose the hot sauce lol), yelling/being a dick was pops or grounded. I turned out pretty decent I don't act up excessively in school or home I'm not saying I'm perfect but I act out on impulse at times if I'm annoyed/mad enough. School giving pops to high school students is fairly useless giving them something such as a small fine or suspension would be better. I doubt that most students would act if a fine was in place my school only fines students now for excessive days missed and fights and since they put them into place I've only heard of maybe 2 fights.

Maybe if kids were challenged in school and were taught useful information and not boring crap they will never need to know they would be much more inclined to behave. Teach young kids languages, computer engineering, and math and art. Everything else is cultural and can be and should be learned on their own.
