Three ****ing years in a row owing. My wife and I are both claiming 0...i guess the next option is to increase additional withholdings, or have a baby

owing > getting a return

You don't have an option for both. I owe state, but get a small refund from federal (under 1k).

I have to pay quarterly 2012 state income tax year

I put the wrong thing. I owe. Quarterly also, which is painful. Something about not seeing the money go out makes it much more palatable.

Don't have a baby, adopt. You get much more as an adoption credit. If you go through DSS you can have in-state college paid for and all sorts of other benefits too. The adoption credit is 20k per child and can be spread out over 4 years if you want.

Bosses owe, they don't get a refund.

That being said, I was refunded 1100 from the Federal government, 300 from the state.

Ain't that the truth. And you know, it kind of explains why the mindset towards taxes is different. If HR takes it out, you effectively never had it and it doesn't bug you how much it is. But if you have to actively pay it, every dollar hurts.

Lol ... You can tell you lack the requisite experience to know. "Crock of ****" indeed.

it's still in small increments over a whole year. For example $10 a week less pay is going to have less financial "impact" than having to cough up $520 at the end of the year. (barring very good financial planning)

Also he is kind of right, I know I'm paying taxes, but while I can tell you my weekly pay amount, I couldn't for the life of me tell you what I get paid before taxes off the top of my head.

Typical self-employed person would pay thousands every quarter ... lemme tell you, it feels a LOT different from getting withholdings on your pay stub.

Honestly, though, I like it better.

Editing for clarity - I like holding my own cash throughout the year better than having money withheld by my employer.

Ya. I like the "extra" money I get that I hadn't planned for. But that's just me.

this kind of **** is just what happens when you do contract work or get commission. You just have to find that magic number for additional withholdings and sometimes that can be hard to predict

Uh you should handle your own withholding for 1099 work or commissions. Put the money aside in something that bears interest.
