curious about maintenance on a benz...

I'm looking at a 2002 mercedes benz e55 amg for 12,000. It has 70,000 miles and the only thing wrong with it is one of the ac vents is clogged. My only concern about this purchase is the maintenance on high end vehicles. Roughly what would it cost yearly for your average maintenance? Anyone have any horror or wonderful my benz has 360,XXX miles story's? Please feel free to share as this is going to be my first vehicle purchase.

Thanks,
Matt

Nothing is more expensive than an old luxury car. Some people get lucky, most don't.

My old man had an 02 S430 and it had a lot of issues. Not like engine-transmission stuff, just lots of little things that you expect to work on a luxury car. We went on a road-trip with it during the winter and the heater broke on the way down. That sucked, we get to our destination and bring it to a dealer who claims to have fixed it. Broke again on the way back. Lots of other little things that I can't remember now, I just know he was happy to get rid of it. Picked up an 06 Acura RL and hasn't had any issues that I know of. And he bought the S430 new. My mum's 07 BMW 335i doesn't even have 40k miles and it's been in the shop more times than my 120k 04 Mazda 3. Transmission issues, engine belts, oil leaks, replaced tires twice ( I think it has to do with the tires never getting rotated and having a heavy camber ). and brakes twice, just tons of **** that shouldn't be happening that often.

Dunno, we've had 4 Japanese cars that have had very few issues, until the Altima got totaled at 160k. All of our German cars have been the opposite. That's how it's been for us.

Thanks for the information. There engine is hand built so I'd hope it lasts awhile along with the tranny. The more research i do the more i find out you are right blazestorm its all about the little things that add up to mucho denero. On the other hand I read that some people just give it routine maintenance and there cars are running like champs. I would like to have the amg but idk if its a gamble im willing to take

Parts on older luxury cars are usually way more expensive.

I mean, there is a reason you can find luxury cars with big engines for decent prices.

Amg mercs are fun to drive, well sort of. I drove an 06 sl65, recently. I almost found the thing undrivable with the amount of torque it had.

I would avoid buying it. If something were to go on that car it would be very expensive to fix.

i happen to be from the south. This will be my personal first vehicle purchased away from the binky of the parents. I do drive a poop box that loves to drink my gas. its a 99 v8 mercury mountaineer awd. the ball joints are shot and my plan is to buy a new car instead of fix them. idk how smart that is!
