Decided to wait on the Europe trip until next summer. Got my airline miles all sorted out finally and we've decided to take a TDF trip next July. Ride some of the stages before the race each day then set up and watch the race come by. Should be pretty slick. I'm terribly excited to go although a little bummed we didn't end up in Italy this summer riding mountains. Just procrastinated too long on the trip planning.

But so is spending thousands on any bike really. My wheels and power meter are already 11 speed compatible. It looks like it would only cost me ~$250 to do the swap ($553 for the 6800 parts I need less $300 for selling the 105 group). I think that's pretty reasonable.

Spending money on bikes because you want to is one thing, just don't try to justify nonsense. Bling because bling.

Bling ordered The only thing that's justifiable is spending some money to get the easier gearing for the canyons I ride. Other than that, the parts will just put a smile on my face. And the $250 to upgrade is easy to swallow. Honestly, I thought it would be more costly to upgrade all the parts, but I hadn't priced everything out yet.

You can get an 11-32 10sp cassette.

It's my money and I'll do what I please with it, damnit!

The price to upgrade is pretty insignificant for me and it will make me happy.

I go to Italy to ride for 2-3 weeks every year, staying in Lucca. I have ridden all over europe and IMO nothing compares to this location. The biggest problem I have with the rest of europe is the terrible food… Also I find italians to be charitable on the road.

I finally got in a few miles on my bike--it's nice. However, while the shifting is smooth with the 105 components, the engagement of gears and overall feel falls far short of the shifting on my CAAD9 with Dura Ace 7900. The Ultegra 6800 bits I ordered will hopefully bridge or span that gap. Anyway...

More options are good.

Speaking of power meters, I can't wait to get the new bottom bracket installed on my bike so I can use the Quarq. The Ultegra bits will be nice, too

Were you stationed in Europe for the Army? Do you go with friends or just by yourself? Just curious, as I want to ride one day in Europe. I have a chance to in January/February of 2015 for a few work trips. Probably only have a chance to ride on the weekends but who knows.

Dustin, your TDF trip sounds amazing....I'm jealous.

Sagan just went to Tinko-Saxoff too.

oh nice, family in Italy..that's that way to do it I suppose lol. I was thinking you found nice places while stationed out there and just stayed in a hostel/hotel or something. Sounds fun though.

If I was looking to do europe on the cheap for riding I would look into short term rentals which are really popular now to find online. I would rather have a kitchen and shop then have to eat in restaurants… food is very expensive. Also a rental is better because many hotels sneer at having your dirty bikes in the hotel.

New parts should be waiting for me when I get home Also happy to report that I got my 'BB30' power meter to work in my BB86 frame. For some reason the bike shop didn't believe me when I told them the Red 22 Quarq has an extra long spindle and would work just fine At least they served their purpose by installing the bearings I provided.

Got everything installed last night, but won't have a chance to ride until the weekend I'm digging the narrower 6800 shifters and the shifting is excellent, especially up front.
