Why is mixing and matching parts bad, as in SRAM Red with SRAM..apex?

My friend bought an SRAM Red crankset w BB30 and then bought SRAM Apex derailer fron and rear, plus shifters and the SRAM PG1050(i think) cassette...is that going to cause issue?

Also, any good workouts to do that will get my speed up? I average around 13-14. anything higher and I get fatigued quicker. I need to get up to 16+ for the Air Force Classic in DC that im gonna do for fun.

thanks.

Depending on cassette and crank he might need a long cage rear derailuer if he is running 11-32 for a rear cassette

Anyone here purchased a bike off bikesdirect.com?

Seems like their prices are unbeatable by anyone else, either online or locally.

Probably going to get a bike from them in July time frame.

This sunday I'm doing the amateur Air Force cycling classic, I can't wait to see how well I can do. It's only 56ish miles but for me being a begginner that will be a good test for me.

CAT4/3?? I haven no clue what that is.

I'm an uber noob but I really enjoy cycling around DC and out on the trails the city has to offer. my Trek is nice but I've ridden a few carbon fiber bikes and titanium bikes with SRAM Red components and needless to say my cheap 600$ trek feels like **** afterwards...hence the reason I was asking about bike direct, I want to upgrade and start doing longer and harder rides, and eventually some races.

I wouldn't cheap out on buying a CF frame, they are not all created equal. I would recommend the entry level versions of the cannondale supersix or the specialized tarmac, they both come with great warranties also which is a big deal with CF.
Also worth setting aside a couple hundred for decent shoes/pedals, absolutely necessary IMO.
I recommend buying from a shop to ensure you get fit decently and have somewhere to go for basic mechanical work.

CATs refer to usa cycling license categories.
1/2= top amateurs who race w/pros
3= expert amateur
4= beginner
5= super beginner

If a 50 mile training ride is hard how do you expect to be competitive in the 3's when races distances are longer than that. Unless you're only looking to do crits.

I'm headed out to Oklahoma tomorrow for Tulsa Tough, should be a good time.

As far as pedals go, I'd recommend the Look Keo Blade pedals. I've been using mine for a while and I think they feel great and have a good amount of float and hold the cleat really solid.

pbkid- although your comment wasn't directed towards me(at least I dont think) I plan to be doing 100+ miles in the future, that is my ultimate goal. Do you, or anyone for that matter have workouts that would help me attain that goal quickly? within the next month or so?

berseker, I'd like to get sram force components on a CF/titanium bike, hoping to spend less that 3k but I know it will be more lol. I'm going to start riding with this bike shop every sunday for a group ride, and hopefully that can get me an "IN" so i might be able to barter a little and get a deal.

When do 2013/next years best and greatest usually come out? I figure that would be the best time to buy a last years bike at a good price perhaps?

To be honest, to do your first century (100 miles) just ride. Build up towards the goal. Ride 25 miles consistently, then 45, then 65, ect. Until you can ride a consistent 100. Doing long rides is all about having a base, you don't have a base yet, but doing longer slower rides will build that base. Once you have a base, then I would say start doing more specific workouts (intervals, ect) depending on what your goals are. If your goal is just to finish a century, just ride your bike and have fun. You should be able to do a 100 miles within the next month with out a doubt if you are spending some good time on the bike.

You don't need to spend anywhere near 3k to have an awesome bike. Look into the CAAD10 and Supersix from Cannondale. In my opinion the CAAD10 is probably the best bang for your buck out there, but if you want carbon go with the Supersix. You could get a CAAD10 with force for well under 3k. Then you have cash left over for other things you may need cycling wise.

CAAD 10 looks amazing. great reviews too. I guess since the price is nice and from what berserker says, getting it custom fitted would help too. I figure this July I will upgrade to it. Is there a huge difference aside from weight when it comes to SRAM Force and SRAM rival. CAAD 10 3 has rival, couldn;t find any with force on it.

Stan rival gxp Not listed

BB30 setups are usually 1/4lb difference

but is there a huge difference in performance that really justifies the cost? I know for some that a few Kg's can mean a huge difference but for me, it really won't since i'm not going to be doing the tour de france anytime soon.

No.. I think biggest difference is just the shifters that red has zero loss shifting and the materials/weight,so you could buy/piece most the rival group
