is it possible?

well this is mostly a question for those who are currently playing in tournaments and all that. do you guys even break even at least when you play if you win, or do you not even break..and is it even possible to "live" off of pure paintball, with a paintball job?and sponsors do they give you free gear and all that so you can sell it?

You will never break even with what you spend between entry, paint, travel, equipment, etc.

It, I imagine, is possible to 'live' off of paintball. But uncommon and unlikely. Sponsors want to sell their gear to make money. They don't want to sell/give it to you at the sponsored team/individual price so that you can sell it and make a buck on it. I have seen some sponsors at the end of the season 'upgrade' the team and tell the team that they can sell the old gear/guns however.

It depends how you look at it! Figure, if you buy the lowest possible equipment, you could play a local tournament for $100 easy!

So $200 in crappy equipment + $100 for the 3 man tournament!
Now say 12 teams sign up, the place where the tournament is held can give away 3 invert mini`s! So thats $300! You can sell those for a quick penny for around $250 if you keep them sealed in the wrap!

You really wont make money off of paintball unless you are active in B/S/T! I have heard accounts of people making $1000+ of buying and re-selling for a profit! If you were to go out and play tournaments, No, You will not make your money back! Paintball is a hobby and sport, not a job!

Our team won the 'event to win' in our regional series, the CFOA, last season bringing us full sets of eclipse gear and etek3s(most of us sold all of this to help cover our costs of last season). The new season starts this coming weekend(March 3-4).

Break even, not a chance. Some Div1 players do by sandbagging local tournaments and only playing when they'll win the prizes.

Unless you play for a top level pro team... no. even then its unlikely.
I spend $3000-$4000 per year in paint ball expenses depending on how many nationals I play usually 5-6.
I may win $700-1000 from local payouts. Nationals don't payout anything. And sponsors don't give anything away for free, especially to divisional players.

If you want to make a career out of paintball, expect to spend a lot of money learning to play the game, and get a mechanical, computer, or electrical engineering degree. Then you can get a job at a major paintball company, while at the same time, becoming one of the best players in the world, so that you can be paid to give clinics.

Possible? Sure in the sense that you walking the moon is possible, or beating up a pack of lions is possible, or winning the lottery 5 times in 1 year is possible. Likely? Probable? Realistic? hell no.

The pro players that make enough money to live off paintball play on heavily sponsored teams and typically work for their sponsors between the events. They're not really getting paid to play so much as they're getting paid to work and their events are free. If you want to live off of paintball, get a degree in engineering or business and work for a company. Play for fun.

I don't really ever expect to break even for winning an event. I don't really care about it that much, personally. I much rather have all the great memories playing with my friends/teammates, having a good time at the event, and a giant trophy that comes with it.

Even the pros have a hard time paying their way. As was said above, a lot of pros run paintball fields/companies to pay for the habit, while others work for them. Some pros run clinics as well, which can help a lot if they charge enough. Discounts/sponsorships on paint help, but at the end of the day there are only a select few that make a living by playing the sport... Even on a professional level.
