I was trying to follow this guide but I can't get my fps over 300@160psi on a boss bolt. I want to get my psi down low for a smooth shot but with my psi down low, I can't get my fps up. Dwell is at 4Ms and the med spring. Can I get 280fps on 120psi? Also what are the pros of the other springs in my kit?

If you want more velocity, you need less tension. Use the short spring.

Ok try the process over again with the short spring?

Yep, that's what I'd do. I'd just try dropping it in with the same settings and see what happens. You'll definitely see a jump in your FPS.

Start the tuning process over with the new spring for best results.

UGH I am getting frustrated. I start this method on V2 bolt, 160psi, short spring, 4ms dwell, bore matched paint. My fps never gets above 300 though it gets close. I have tried only messing with my dwell, once at 3ms, once at 6ms. No change. When I drop my pressure down the 140, my velocity never sees over 250/260, when pressure is at 120, it never goes over 245/250. Bottom line, I can get my velocity to the 285 range but with my pressure high with all the kick and noise, and then what was the point of replacing my bolt? How do I get a low pressure ~285 at the chrono?!

do you have a brand new axe or is it broken in?
have you tried cleaning and re-lubing the poppet?
what kind of lube are you using?

Side comment: Oddly enough with my gun, I cant explain why, when I first started using the boss bolt I had no problems with getting it to work but couldnt get the lurker/boss hybrid to work. Did some tinkering with the bolt guide orings and switched from using the smartparts GREESE to Lurker lube. Now I cant get my boss bolt to work when taking out all the lurker parts but the hybrid shoots money! shooting 275+/- 3, dwell 5.5 pressure 125psi, no idea how many turns.
What to take from this, try changing out the orings on the bolt guide and clean the whole thing...sometimes that may help.

Yes, lube your poppet. Also don't bore match, under bore.

I bought my axe used, I don't know how used but it was in great shape when I bought it. I have got to be getting close to have ran 10 cases through this thing myself. As far as my poppet goes, I developed the infamous bolt leak, so I had replaced my poppet face, o ring, and freshly lubed everything. That has since been fixed. I JUST ran these steps over with my stock bolt and spring and I made velocity over 300 consistently, dropped my pressure until my fps was ~285, and that left me at about 150psi. Any thoughts?

@Boss, I have under bored, over bored, and matched. I have gone through quite a bit of paint trying to figure this out.

I have the same issue. I have a New - not broken in XSV Axe (shot 3 or so cases through it)

I dropped in the XSV Boss bolt (short spring) and with the back cap at 1.5 turns out and the dwell anywhere from 3 to 4 (I tried 3, 3.5, & 4) I have to set the reg pressure to aprox 170 - 180 to get to a FPS of 285.

I use a freak kit and maintain a very good paint to insert match. I am not looking to get some freakish amount of efficiency. I want a super soft/smooth shot- easy on paint, and maintain at least 6 pods and and a hopper off of a 68/4500.

Anyone got any alternative tuning suggestions? I would like to maintain a reg pressure below 140.

Why do people seem to have trouble understanding NOT to match paint/bore with any of the aftermarket bolts? UNDERBORE, it will be your friend and let you drop your OP more, letting it feel smoother.

If you don't care about efficiency, then sweet spotting your back cap isn't necessary. Just set the lowest possible dwell according to the tuning guide, put your reg at whatever pressure you want, and adjust velocity with the back cap. I ran my Lurker bolt at around 125PSI with this type of setup last winter; it's CRAZY inefficient (like 1500PSI drop per game), but it's smooth.

That is what I would do but my velocity would cap at 255 that way.

So I think when I first started tuning my axe, I was using some if the old settings. The website says 4ms dwell and the medium spring. The pamphlet that came with my bolt says 3ms and short spring (should have been following that from the beginning). I started with the 160psi/3ms/short spring/1.5 back cap and saw high 290's, so I dropped my pressure to 140 and I was getting 275-279fps when I ran out of air. If I can get that fps at 140psi I think I will be happy.

Try it with standard bolt & spring - and increase your dwell to 8 ms

Mine runs like that, @ 150 psi operating pressure, and consistently shoot 290-300 over the chrono before I bother worrying about bore size (which then puts it in the 292-298 range).

The lighter aftermarket bolts are not gentler on paint IMHO, because the lower weight just means greater acceleration, which amounts to the same force. So, while people THINK the gun is smoother/gentler on paint.... it really isn't.

Lower PSI at the Axe reg = less kick

Except you're also lowering your OP, so in the end while it may not be an "ehrmahgerd I kern merk mehr gern shert llerk a bler gern" quiet, it shouldn't have any more impact on The paint in the gentle/rough department

Edit: Yours, however, may be softer than mine, whereas mine runs at 160 with a lighter boss, but it I put mine back to stock I can't shoot any lower than 190 OP and keep it above 270. Gotta remember, there's always little differences between everyone's guns.
