Also, cww. I just did a test with a standard tnt cannon, with 7 tnt powering it. Only one level. Tried it with cake and slab. Cake at its furthest shot was 9 blocks shorter than where the slab was getting it. The slab seemed to be more consistent as well, hitting in the same spot everytime (5 shots).
The cake hit way shorter (10 blocks) than its furthest which it only hit once.
I think it might be the way that you are making your cannon, and not the cake. Take a screen shot and post it.
Edit: Ok, with more testing, it seems that cake does work better (only by a few blocks in my testing) when you make a shorter (5 tnt) cannon. When you make a longer (7 tnt) slabs work better.
I switched and shot sand. Hit 365 blocks without really trying. If I get more free time I might try and clean up the cannon and get it shooting further.
