I have a 2001 saturn sl2 automatic. It will not shift past first gear and to go in reverse i have to really put my foot in it. There is no check engine light. Any help out there?

Make sure the transmission fluid is full for one (check while motor is running and the car is in neutral), if it is low the car will not shift into the next gear while driving. That being said it happened to me but I was able to go into reverse, just would not shift from 2nd to 3rd while harder on the gas.

Windex mod would probably help. PM Clawhammer for more information.

How mechanically inclined are you? If their is no CEL on you might be in for a treat when it comes to a non functioning automatic trans.

Like stated above, check the fluid first. If that's fine then it could be something lodged/blocking a port in the valve body. Might even be a shift solenoid went south. It's going to be hard to diagnose without proper tools. You just might have to bring it in to a shop.

If it was rough shifting into reverse or other gears but was drivable, it would be worth draining the transmission pan and replacing the transmission filter.

Pretty much entirely solved my my old van's problems.

Not the first thing I would do though.

DTC P0732 will set if the PCM detects an incorrect actual 2nd gear ratio when 2nd gear is commanded On when:

The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds (2001)*
The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds, 1 minute is allowed to elapse, then condition again exists for longer than 3 seconds (2000)
The high main line pressure has been commanded
The transaxle is in a forward gear
The input speed is greater than 224 RPM
The vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph)
The speed noise parameter = NO
The steady state ratio fail counter equals 255 for an in-gear failure, or the shift fail counter is greater than 100 on a downshift or upshift to 2nd gear (128=0 or normal operation)
DTC P0732 diagnostic runs continuously once the above conditions have been met.

DTC P0732 is a type A DTC for 2000, type B for 2001.*

*Applicable to vehicles built after June 2000.

Diagnostic Aids

Important
If DTCs P0745, P0746, P0756, P0758, P0761, P0763, P0766, P0768 or P0789 is set, diagnose that DTC first. A diagnosed PC solenoid, shift solenoid 2, 3 or 4 low/high circuit fault DTC may have caused DTC P0732 to set.

Important
If any shift solenoid performance DTCs P0782 or P0783 3rd or 4th gear stuck On) are set, diagnose the highest gear first. A 3rd or 4th gear stuck On may cause no 2nd gear.

Refer to Pressure Ports - Air Check and Part Description for pressure apply points and for component/location description.

Possible causes of no 2nd gear are listed in the flowchart on the succeeding page.

Verify TRANSMISSION ISS and TRANSMISSION OSS read correctly on Scan tool.

Make sure the pressure control, shift 2, shift 3 and shift 4 solenoids are not intermittently sticking. Sticking shift solenoid 3 or 4 may cause 3rd or 4th gear to be applied from an initial start causing no 2nd gear. Audible sound should be similar for all solenoids. A muffled tone indicates the need for replacement.

I'm guessing your transmission needs to be replaced.

You are one of the few who are the exception. If the fluid hasn't been regularly serviced, doing a flush and filter will likely cause more problems. If the car isn't driving or shifting right, most shops won't touch the fluid other than topping it off because the customer will almost always be back with the "you just did a flush and now my car doesn't work. You ****ed it up." line and try to get the shop to buy them a tranny.

OP- Take it to a shop that specializes in transmission work and get it checked out. Going to someone who doesn't will likely be a waste of time and possibly money as the shop will just recommend a trans shop. Your transmission is likely done though.

Unless you find some way to teach yourself to read a gear chart for automatic transmissions, you need to take it to a transmission shop.

Transmissions use a few different solenoids on the valve body to attain different gears. You need to be able to understand charts designed to show technicians which solenoids are switched to shift into different gears. You are probably not able to do that.

You most likely have one solenoid that is either not working at all, or stuck open, only allowing the vehicle to stay in one gear.

The problem here is that a lot of times transmissions with higher mileage are opened up by transmission shops to be repaired, only to find that ports in the valve body and intricate spring set ups needed for transmission operation have become damaged, which at that point usually means that you are getting a transmission. In the log run, it's going to be much cheaper for you to replace the transmission then it will probably be to pay someone to take it apart, diagnose what's wrong with the trans, and replace all needed components.

Your best bet is a junkyard transmission if you are able to do the replacement yourself. It's never a guarantee that a junkyard part will be any good, but a reman unit may be out of your price range.

YOur best bet is to just get your tranny rebuilt, replaced, or a whole new car since most shops will charge you almost 3 grand to rebuild it. Best of luck.

You could go on craigslist and find a mechanic on there...that'll save you from going to the dealership.
