I meant that after 2010 it looked like he was going to be an elite fielder, and then last year he went back to being mediocre. The rest of the infield aside from Teixiera, even including the bench, is just bad.

Not really, he just never got charged for errors in 2010 despite committing plenty. His range is meh and he makes errors. he's a mediocre defensive player who's elite because he gives you the production of a good corner infielder or outfielder from 2nd base.

Cano is probably more suited towards third base than second. But they didn't have anywhere else to put him, so there he is. He isn't bad, but but he isn't elite, defensively speaking. He's below average. But, with that bat, who the hell cares?
I'm hoping that Anthony Rendon turns in to Robinson Cano.

I don't know that I'd say that. I think he just had a great year on defense and that it's an outlier, not his norm, which is mediocre. Aside from 2010 he's been top 10 in 2B errors in the league for I think every year that he's been a starter. Also he is above average in the range department for 2B.
Ideally I'd like to see the Yankees move him to 3rd after ARod is done and bring in a better defensive fit. We really don't have anyone ready in the farm system for 2B though. I'd say our closest good infielder would be Culver, and he's got some batting work to do before he steps up to the majors.

Cano's defense is below average but not abbysmal. If he had a good defensive SS backing him up and a manager that made liberal use of infield shifts, you wouldnt even notice.
Jeter and arod are beyond saving though. "Past a diving Jeter" may have been the most commonly used phrase in baseball broadcasting last year.

Yeah, his fielding percentage stays below average but that's only because he can't get to a lot of balls.
I like Girardi but that's just another knock on him. I also think he rests guys too much. And not just old guys like Jeter and ARod.

No, jeter sucks defensively now. He has no range and dives at balls some shortstops basically walk to.

That was my point. His fielding percentage stays mediocre (and doesn't turn horrible) because he can't reach a lot of balls and doesn't get the opportunity to make the errors that he would make if he could reach them. He ends up diving because he is so slow.

yeah, jeter was never the rangiest SS in the league (contrary to what diehard yankees fans might have you believe) but its gotten just pathetic in the last 2 years.
Actually, if you replaced jeter with a rangy, good defensive SS like Tulo, we may be having a discussion about how Yanks infield D was slightly above average. Tex is a solid defensive 1B (although i think slightly overrated), Cano is only a little below average, and that would be overshadowed by a good SS. ARod is pretty bad still I guess, but some of the other options at 3B are about league average defensive wise.
edit: but seriously that dozen or so games when Jorge Posada played first base, I wouldn't have been surprised to see the yankees give up an infield grandslam.

No, most baseball fans knew that. The truth is that if Jeter weren't Jeter, he would have moved over to second base and ARod would have played SS.
But Jeter is "The Captain" and that was that.

Its one of the great jokes in baseball history that potentially the greatest short stop in the history of the game toils away on the hot corner in the Bronx.
Oh well, Arod is a douche bag and Honus Wagner is universally liked by all baseball fans everywhere, so its probably for the best.

They're pretty weak for position players in the minors. But I'm pretty sure they'll be fine for at least four years because of how young the current players are.

Jesus those guys are young, but then I realize MadBum was just 21 last year. Jesus. I love pitching, these NL west league games are gonna be great. Giants and AZ could become like a Boston/NY in the coming years, nawmsayn?

Tulo's a freak defensively. every form of defensive metric we have absolutely loves the guy, and he sure as **** passes the eye test.
