I'm looking into getting new fins, does anyone here use split-fins? I had a chance to try some out in a pool and thought they were pretty neat, but I'd love to hear some reviews from guys that actually use them.

I have a pair. Split fins are great for just cruising around, giving a kick every so often. They aren't as hard on the legs and ankles as full fins, so if you a kicking lightly or doing a ddown-current drift dive (where you don't have to swim back to the boat) or are just moving slowly around a reef or wreck, then thye are great.
WHat you sacrifice is speed. If you need to move fast, then full fins will beat a split fin any day (more surface area pushing against the water). However, they can put a little more stress on you legs.
I always bring both with me depending on who I am with. If I am leading some friends around who are already certified, then I can use my splits because I know they can take care of themselves if something goes wrong. I will use my full fins if I know I will have to do a long swim to get to where I want to dive or I am assisting with a class and I will have to move as fast as possible if a student needs assistance. Also, fullfins are best on top of the water if ou have to do a rescue.

my dad has been taking weekend trips to nassau with his plane. Says it's absolutely empty out there (since offseason) and that the waters look beautiful for diving. 1 hour by our plane and I can go scuba diving in Nassau and be back home for a late lunch.
Too bad I can't see myself making it out there any time soon. Physics 2 with Cal 2 FTL.

Thanks very much! Is there a specific pair you'd recommend? I'm not looking to break the bank on anything so a fin in the 125-160 range or so would be perfect. Looking to treat myself to a newer pair of fins and perhaps a new suit

stingi: Tusa makes a good pair that are about 160. They are a little heavy though and can affect your buoyancy slightly if you aren't used to them. My favorites to use are from Atomic. They are a little pricier ( about 190-200) but they are lighter and are more streamline. The Tusa ones are a little bulky.
For a new suit, the 2012 Aqualung suits are amazing. Keeps you warm, easy to get into, and very durable. The fit was nice too. It seemed that you could go a couple mm less on the thickness because of the material. My Aqualug suit was a 3mm and everyone else was using 5-7 mm and I was jsut as warm as all of them.

Thanks for the tips! I'll have to look into the atomic fins, I think I actually had heard good things about them before, I'll see if I can check them out

They work well and I beleive they are worth the price. Only thing I don't like about them is that they cost about 200 and come with a basic strap. I prefer the spring straps and the old Aqualung slingshots came with them (new ones don't). If you can find a pair with the spring straps, I would go for those. Don't really have to worry about straps breaking and they always set to just the right amount of tension on you foot to keep you in comforably but not too tight that they are hurting.

Long time diver here.....I dive 1+ times a year in Cozumel Mexico since 1996. I hate lakes, so I am pretty much an ocean snob lol.
Also. I will outswim any solid fin with my split fins any day of the week. I have the Tusa Xpert Zoom (Black - stiffer) and I can swim into a 2+ knot current with them. I fully reccomend splits as they are easier on your legs/knees and you will get better air times as they require less force/energy/air. I think the only advantage paddle fins have now are for photographers. Other than that, splits are the way to go.
I have over 500 ocean dives in Cozumel (wife and I love it there so never been anywhere else lol!), so ask any questions!
