Is it frowned upon for rec ballers to get expensive markers?

I'm thinking about upgrading my gun, got a mini currently, to maybe an Ego 10, G6r or something like that. But this feeling that people will look down on me for having a nice gun but nothing having the skills to back it keeps coming back to me.

I've only been playing for a year or so, not that great yet because I didn't get serious until the last few months (and it's winter so I haven't really had much time to play), but I've been working in my time off from pb and have saved up a ton.

My mind is telling me if I have the money for it, and I know I will want to upgrade in the future, why settle for an axe/etek 3 now and then have to buy a high end later, when I know I am going to just end up with a high end. To be honest, it seems like there is a huge part of the pb community that is against kids and weekend warriors having nice markers, just seems odd to me.

no it is not frowned upon for rec players to have nice equipment...having expensive equipment and not knowing how to maintain or take care of it is the damn shame of it all. If you are looking to get a high end marker, I would start with an ego since they are really a bulletproof design and simple to learn how to service. Getting a g6r for your first highend marker could prove to be a nightmare if you dont have the right regulator, grease, pressure tester, and understanding of the operation of bob's guns.

just my 2 cents

Buying quality products is smart.

I am a rec baller, I play the odd scenario but no tournies...unless there just for fun. Most of my markers are $500+ And all of them are pumps...

I will admit right now that I am not the most knowledgable person about electros but I have made a few observations...

1) To me, this years model does not seem HUGELY different from the previous two or three years models...

2) I notice that the price of electros tend to drop very quickly where a brand new $1200 marker may only be $600 two years later...This makes me wonder if the performance and technology has progressed at a level to warrent that kind of depreciation or not????

Personally, I would look around the BST and try to find a good High end marker that is a couple years old...You may find you get the high quality you want without paying the high price...

My $0.02

^^^Well said and I would totally agree with both posts above^^^

Just maintain your highend marker and people won't look down on you.

i only play rec ball and scenario's. there is nothing wrong with having high end guns, take care of them, know how they work and make the marker work for you. who cares what other people think. half the people are probably envious or jealous because the cannot afford the marker that you have.

Only thing people will frown upon is that you take high en expensive guns into woods with rocks trees blah blah .. It's your money your life o with what you want .. You shouldn't care what people think of you if your young..

Have fun enjoy paintball .. Just don't make the Jump to high end guns if you find that you only play a few times a year ,. Really not worth dropping $900+ on a gun that never gets used.. I would factor that into your buying descion.. Do you you play alo not so much .. Like you wouldn't buy a brand new pick up truck because you need to move something 2 times a year..

Start off with a used high end learn to maintain it then go from there

I dont ever tell them this, but the feild I used to work at I loved to kids who had brand new guns and no idea how to use them. Their parents sold me egos, droids and DM's for about 400 brand new because their kid swore it was broke. The hardest repair I had on one of those guns was the dye needed lubing.

I was a kid, I feel bad but I made out okay lol

Only thing about new players that tweeks my trigger is when you get the first time 10 year old with a brand new Ego and 3 grand in new playing gear. Otherwise if you can take care of it and appreciate it I don't mind new player having it.

I agree with everything in here, go ahead and spend your money, put the time in and learn to appreciate it. The kids that are "annoying" or looked down on are the kids who dont appreciate what they have. Ive seen several kids leave games in the woods because of a broken gun. Only thing broken was they never aired it up because their tippman never needed to be aired up. As long as you put value into your gear no one will look down on you.

Alright, thanks for the advice guys. Pretty much reassured what I was thinking.

I'm really hoping to start playing a ton over the summer, but the winter hasn't given me that many opportunities to play so far haha. But I've been playing for a couple years now... but I finally started making a good amount of money now that I'm old enough to get 'real' jobs, haha.

This. There was a kid that couldn't have been older than 13 last summer walking around with all brand new eclipse gear and a csl...funny thing is he didn't know how to turn the air on at the start of the game...laughed my *** off!

Think of it this way. A good high end should last you for YEARS of casual rec play if you treat it right. I dropped almost a grand on a fancy high end, nearly eight years ago (04 Viking). Still going strong, still keeping up with the new toys as well. And an interesting thing, once you got the "fancy paint hose" category covered you may find yourself spending more time looking at the weirder and more special purpose guns. No risk trying that out that over the top mil-sim setup, or that custom cowboy lever action, since if it doesn't work out you always have the "good" gun handy.

You just use what is most comfortable for you to use, and don't even consider what anyone else thinks.
After all, what I think has nothing to do with how you have fun.
I'll just tell you that playing fair and having fun is more important than what you may be holding or any other persons opinion.

Don't worry about what other people have to say regarding your skills compared to the cost of your marker. If you have the cash to drop on a high end marker and you like it, buy it.

Since when does being a "rec" player mean you shouldn't have the very best of gear? Is your enjoyment of the sport somehow less important than that of a tournament player?

Hell no. Use whatever floats your boat. A person's playing does the talking anyway -- not their gear.

Lol get whatever you want but if you just playing rec I wouldn't suggest getting the "best" gear that's worth a ton of cash lol.

For sure go with the Ego. It is probably the easiest marker series to maintain.

Dont get conned into buying an 'expensive' marker from someone at a field though make sure you do your research ( on here even ) on any marker you are going to buy or trade

One thing I forgot to mention is that while I believe you should shoot whatever marker you want -- you should also know that by upgrading to a "high-end" gun, it won't make a bit of difference in terms of your effectiveness on the field (that's probably not what you wanted to hear ).

Your Mini already shoots as well as a paintball gun can shoot, provided you're using quality paint and you maintain the thing. A high-end gun will be higher quality and have more bells and whistles. It might even make you feel cooler and thus you'll be a little more confident. But it won't get you any more eliminations or win you more games.

You'll have to develop your SKILL for that. Class dismissed.
